Ameren Illinois is starting work on an upgrade to its natural gas distribution system.

Ameren plans to replace 350 miles of steel lines in central and southern Illinois. They'll also upgrade 70 stations that regulate gas and they're planning to install 468,000 smart meters. They allow communication between customers and Ameren.

The project is expected to take about a decade and will cost $400 million.
