A parent of an Effingham Junior High School student was denied re-admittance to the school building by police on the last day of classes for the school year Friday and police were called to assist with the incident.  The incident was the result of disciplinary action taken because some female students were found to be wearing shorts that didn't meet the school dress code.

The parent contacted us Friday morning after the incident, saying there were several students affected by the action.

Effingham Junior High School Principal Bill Myers said, "We upheld our handbook (guidelines) like we do every day of the year."

Myers said a statement by the parent that a guidance counselor was going into classrooms to check students for the length of their shorts was untrue.

Unit 40 Superintendent Mark Doan said early Friday afternoon that he was not at the junior high for the incident.  Doan said he was told "a number" of students were involved, but was not given a specific number.
