The Effingham Public Works Department recently completed the installation of an eight-inch watermain along Douglas Avenue between Banker Street and Fifth Street.
The project was completed in advance of the planned reconstruction of Douglas Avenue from Park Street to Fifth Street. The street work is to begin in June, once school is out for the summer.
The City received a $100,000 grant through the support of St. Sen. Kyle McCarter for the roadway improvements, with the City paying the balance of the project cost.
City Administrator Jim Arndt said the goal is to have the reconstructed street with curb, gutter, storm water improvements and asphalt surface completed before the beginning of the school year in August. The street runs along the north side of South Side School.
