Neighbors heard cars at nearby Hendelmeyer Park early Friday morning and then heard what sounded like vandalism and notified police.
The subjects overturned the bleachers and trash cans around the back ball diamond, now known as Turner Field. The vandals also damaged the drinking fountain, meaning water flowed for some time before crews were summoned to get the water turned off. There was apparently some effort to damage the electrical boxes, which was potentially dangerous or even deadly for those involved in the mischief.
Park District workers had most of the damage corrected by 9am. Neighbors apparently got a pretty good look at the vehicles at the scene, so it's hoped the vandals will be located.
