Proposed legislation that would prohibit a school from using a native name, logo or mascot was passed out of committee in the Illinois House Wednesday. A number of school districts in our area would be impacted by passage of the bill.
House Bill 1237 was introduced in January. As the measure is currently crafted, schools could continue to use uniforms or other items purchased before the effective date of the legislation until September 1, 2028.
Now that the measure is out of committee, it could go before the full House next week.
If the measure passes in the House, it would go to the Senate. If it passes there, it goes to the governor for his signature.
