T-town Downs EHS, South Central, Altamont, Cumberland, CHBC Claim H.S. Baseball Wins

TEUTOPOLIS — Effingham High School held a 3-2 lead going into the sixth inning and that’s when Teutopolis came to life Monday in baseball action.

The Wooden Shoes batted around and scored seven runs to move ahead and take a 9-5 victory.

The Hearts edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead as Andrew Wagoner led off with a single. With one out, Colton Webb homered to right field and the Hearts took the lead.

T-town came back with a run in the second as Carter Hoene and Henry Thompson drew back-to-back walks. With one out,  Cooper Tegeler was walked. A second out came on a strikeout, but the fourth walk of the contest scored a run for the Shoes as Davin Worman picked up the RBI.

The Wooden Shoes tied the score in the third inning. Austin Borries led off with a double. Jason Kreke followed with a double down the right field line and the Wooden Shoes tied the contest as Borries scored.

The Hearts took the lead in the top of the fourth. Jude Traub and Max Flack had back-to-back singles. With one out, Wade Bushur was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded. The run scored on an error on a ball hit by Wyatt Hayes and the Hearts were up 3-2.

Teutopolis then put the game on ice with a seven-run sixth inning. Walks again proved to be the Hearts’ doom as Worman, Kreke, Hoene and Gavin Addis drew walks. Addis started the runs by drawing a walk and scoring on an error. Cooper Tegeler hit a double and Aiden Niemerg followed with a single. Worman drew a walk and was sacrificed over on a ball hit by Mick Niebrugge that gave him an RBI. Borries was hit by a pitch and Kreke, Hoene and Henry Thompson followed with walks and earned an RBI.

Addis, in his second at-bat of the inning, banged out a double that scored two runs and when the dust had cleared after the inning, the Shoes led 9-3.

EHS came back in the seventh to score two runs on singles by Traub and Wyatt Hayes and three errors.

The Hearts (5-3) are back in action today at Mount Zion in Apollo Conference play.

The Wooden Shoes finished with six hits and drew 11 walks in the contest.  Addis went four innings giving up three runs on five hits, one walk and striking out seven. But Andrew Probst picked up the win, going three innings, allowing two runs on two hits, three walks and striking out four.

The Wooden Shoes are now 9-1 on the season and will play today at Olney.

Effingham fell in junior varsity action to Newton, 5-3. The Eagles outhit EHS 8-6.  Newton was led by Eli Wolf and Cylas Dickerson with two singles each. Dickerson added two RBI.

EHS was led by J. Warner and O. Schuette with a single and an RBI each and C. Kalber with two singles.

At Teutopolis

At Kinmundy

South Central blanked Brownstown/St. Elmo by a 4-0 count Monday behind the no-hit pitching of four hurlers.

Zane Montes started the contest and went 1.2 innings not allowing a hit, walking three and striking out three. Callaway Smith came on to go 2.1 innings striking out six. Chase Guerrettaz then went two innings with two strikeouts and Trevan Sidwell finished out with three strikeouts.

The four Cougar pitchers allowed only three walks and struck out 14.

South Central edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead then tacked on single runs in the second, third and fifth.

The Cougars had six hits led by Colton Smith with a single, double and an RBI and Montes with a single and two RBI. Guerrettaz added a single and an RBI.

BSE dropped to 3-4 on the season and returns to action today at Altamont.

At Kinmundy

At Newton

Altamont had five hits less than Newton but came out a 9-5 winner Monday.

The Eagles edged out to a 2-1 first inning lead. But Altamont came back with a seven-run fourth and went on for the victory.

Newton outhit Altamont by an 8-3 count. Altamont’s lone hits were a home run and three RBI from Brayden Elam, a solo homer from Keegan Schultz and a single and an RBI from Will Reardon. Brayden Schnarre had an RBI as did Cooper McManaway.

Newton was led by Quincy Fulton with a home run and two RBI, David Ferguson with three singles and three RBI, Kohlten Barthelme with a double and Reed Tharp two singles.

Dyson Wagner threw the win on the mound. He went five innings allowing two runs on five hits, five walks and striking out one.

At Newton

At Sullivan

Cumberland took a 1-0 lead in the fifth but Sullivan came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Pirates then rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-2 victory.

Cumberland finished with 10 hits in the contest while Grady Jones went the distance on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits, no walks while striking out three.

The Pirates’ Bryson Weber had two doubles and Jones had a single, double and one RBI. Isaac Venetta, Maddox Miller and Gavin Keyser had a single and an RBI each.

At Sullivan

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City scored all six of its runs in the fifth and claimed a 6-4 win over Vandalia Monday.

The Vandals took a 2-0 lead in the second and pushed that to 4-0 in the top of the fifth.

But here came the Bobcats scoring all six runs in the bottom of the fifth.

CHBC’s Wyatt Rueff had two doubles and two RBI while Conner Nowitzke added two singles.

At Shelbyville

Shelbyville held a 3-0 lead after two innings but Neoga came back to tie the score in the top of the third.

Here came the Rams with two runs in the bottom of the third and they went on for the 5-3 victory Monday.

Neoga finished with four hits but had four errors. Colin Blazich led in hitting with a single, home run and three RBI.

The Indians dropped to 5-2 on the season.

At Shelbyville
