 EHS Claims Softball DH, S. Central Wins Own Tourney, Altamont, T-town, Newton Capture Victories

Effingham High School handed Mahomet-Seymour a softball doubleheader loss Saturday.

The Hearts edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead in the opener then tacked on another run in the third for a 2-0 victory.

Natalie Armstrong threw a four-hitter, not allowing a walk while striking out three for the win on the mound.

Despite being outhit, the Hearts tallied the two runs behind a single by Ryley Engel and Sidney Donaldson also earning an RBI. Jerzi Bierman had the other hit, a single.

In the second contest, EHS got on a hitting run, banging out 13 in the 8-3 victory.

Keagyn Koenig hit two home runs and finished with three RBI. Mya Harvey had two singles, a double and an RBI. Madison Kirk added a single, double and an RBI while Bierman and Tessa Raddatz had a double and an RBI each. Ryley Engel had a double and Bria Beals a single and an RBI.

EHS trailed Mahomet-Seymour by a 2-0 count after three innings. But the Hearts put together a five-run fourth, tacked on two more in the fifth and finished with one in the sixth.

Saige Althoff threw all seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, two walks while striking out five.

At Farina

South Central hosted Breese Central and Woodlawn in a tournament Saturday and downed both squads to win.

South Central defeated Breese Central by a 15-5 count in six innings behind a 15-hit attack.

The Cougars ran out to a 7-2 opening inning lead.

The winners finished with 15 hits. Kyra Swift had two singles, a triple and drove in a run. Perci Reid had two singles and three RBI, while Maddie Peddicord added two singles and an RBI. Kaitlyn Swift, Kinlee Thompson and Amelia Montes had two singles and an RBI each. Lauren Johnson added a single and two RBI and Bri Buchanan finished with an RBI.

South Central then trounced Woodlawn by a 15-5 count in six innings.

The Cougars ran out to an 8-0 lead then tacked on three more in the fourth and four in the sixth.

Peddicord finished with three singles while Kyra Swift added two singles. Buchanan tallied a single and three RBI while Johnson had a single and two RBI. Kaitlyn Swift, Thompson, Zoey Feldhake and Abi Shuler had a single and an RBI each. Reid added an RBI.

Peddicord went five innings for the pitching victory. She allowed three runs on three hits, three walks while striking out five.

At Nokomis

Altamont put together an 11-run third inning and handed Nokomis a 12-1 loss in five innings via the 10-run rule Friday.

The Indians had only six hits in the contest led by Laila Hankins with two singles and two RBI, Sophia Long with two singles and an RBI and Ella Nelson and Madison Tonn with a single and two RBI each.

Long went the five innings on the mound, giving up one run on two hits, three walks while striking out seven.

At Nokomis

At Teutopolis

Nine was Teutopolis’ number Friday in a victory over Sullivan.

The Wooden Shoes finished the game with nine hits and claimed a 9-4 win.

Kylie Borries led the way for the Shoes with two singles and three RBI. Kera Hartke had a single and triple. Malea Helmink had two singles, Kayleigh Zerrusen added a single and an  RBI and Olivia Wermert had a single and two RBI. Alyssa Tipton and Chloe Hoene added an RBI each.

Gaddis went five innings, allowing four runs on two hits. Although she gave up 12 walks, she struck out nine.

At Teutopolis

Newton and South Central were tied at 1-1 in the second inning Friday.

But the Eagles got on a scoring binge with five runs in the third, four in the fourth and finished the game with six in the fifth for a 16-1 victory.

Amelia Collins went the five innings on the mound, allowing one run, three hits, two walks while striking out one.

Meanwhile, the Eagles had 15 hits led by Avery Mulvey with a double, two home runs and three RBI. Bailee Frichtl added two doubles and three RBI. Audrie Reich finished with three singles and three RBI while Allie Stanley added two singles and an RBI. Jorjia Reich had two singles and an RBI.

South Central’s Abi Shuler had an RBI.  Kaitlyn Swift, Lauren Johnson and Amelia Montes had a single each.
