 Eighth-Grade Regionals — Feb. 1 Results

Effingham, seeded third at the Class 8-4A Mount Zion Boys Basketball Regional, downed sixth-seeded Stephen Decatur in the third game of the day Saturday.

In the opener, Taylorville won over Rochester, 48-26. The second contest went to Mattoon over Charleston, 34-25.

Effingham trailed Stephen Decatur 9-5 after the opening quarter. Joel Flack was the lone player for the Mustangs to score with a regular basket and a three-pointer.

Although the Mustangs came back with a 9 -6 second period, they still trailed 15-14 at halftime.

Then in the second half, Effingham put everything together and went on a 29-6 run.

Effingham had a 14-3 third quarter to lead 28-18. Flack and Coen Westjohn scored four points each.

In the final quarter, Effingham kept the pressure on with a 15-3 run as Flack added seven more points to his total to finish with 18 in the contest. He hit seven field goals, one from three-point range, and was three of four at the ilne.

Dagg Thompson ended with seven points while Kaden Rohr and Cameron Moon added six each.

Effingham will now face Mattoon at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. In the opening game of the evening,  Mount Zion faces Taylorville at 5.

The two winners will advance to the championship contest Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Class 8-4A Mount Zion Regional

Class 8-1A Mattoon St. John’s Regional

Sigel St. Michael is the lone area team in the Mattoon St. John’s Regional to advance from Saturday’s play.

The Sharpshooters, seeded No. 1, opened with a 46-17 win over Windsor.

Oblong beat Effingham Sacred Heart, 39-33 while the final contest saw Findlay Okaw Valley edging Newton St. Thomas, 29-27.

Neoga fell to Mattoon St. John’s, 55-22.

St. John’s ripped out to a 23-0 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Brody Strobl led Neoga with 11 points.

Class 8-1A Mattoon St. John’s Regional

Class 8-2A Assumption Central A&M Regional

South Central, St. Elmo/Brownstown and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City were all winners in opening round play at the Assumption Central A&M Regional Saturday.

South Central downed North Clay (Louisville), 32-19 in the opener.

The second game went to St. Elmo/Brownstown over Assumption Central A&M, 41-20. The final contest went to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City over Altamont, 48-20.

South Central advances to meet top-seeded Effingham St. Anthony Tuesday at 6 p.m. followed by St. Elmo/Brownstwon facing Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 7:15.

The winners advance to the championship game Thursday at 6 p.m.

 

Class 8-2A Hutsonsville Regional

Stewardson-Strasburg was the lone area team to pick up a victory at the Hutsonville Regional Saturday.

In the opening contest, Arcola won over Villa Grove, 48-35.

Stewardson-Strasburg, seeded second, then downed Hutsonville, 45-11.

Casey-Westfield took out the other local school in the regional, Dieterich with a 48-32 count.

Top-seeded Paris Crestwood now faces Arcola at 6 p.m. Wednesday while Stew-Stras meets third-seeded Casey-Westfield at 7:15 p.m.

The winners will advance to the title contest Friday at 6 p.m.

 

Class 8-3A Teutopolis Regional

Jasper County fell to Lawrenceville by a 50-37 tally at the Teutopolis Regional Saturday.

Lawrenceville Parkview, seeded fourth, took an 11-6 opening quarter lead and led 22-13 at halftime.

Jasper County came back with a 15-13 third quarter but Parkview got back on track with a 15-9 final quarter.

Brendan Emmerich led Jasper County with 15 points while Hank Huber added 11. Huber was the top rebounder. Chase Kistner was the top passer.

Jasper County finished the season with a 10-11 record.

Robinson Nuttall then downed Cumberland, 50-23 while the final contest went to Marshall over Red Hill (Bridgeport), 43-22.

Top-seeded Teutopolis will now face Lawrenceville Parkview at 6 p.m. Tuesday while Robinson Nuttall and Marshall square off at 7:15.

The winners meet Thursday at 6 p.m. for the regional championshp.
