 St. A Wins NTC Girls Tourney, EHS Claims Salem Invite Crown, LPC, Highland, LIC Tourney Finals

BEECHER CITY — Effingham St. Anthony picked up a 49-44 victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo to win the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 15-6 opening quarter lead. BSE came back with a 10-7 second period run to pull within 22-16.

The Bombers then had a 13-12 third quarter to pull within 34-29 going into the final quarter.

The two teams then played to a 15-15 final period and the Bulldogs won by five points.

Aydsen Rios led the way with 21 points on nine field goals, one a three-pointer, and two of two at the line. She hit five of six from the floor in the fourth quarter. Nancy Ruholl chipped in with 16, had eight rebounds and two steals. Addi Nuxoll led in rebounds with nine.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Dayana Haslet twith 29 points on seven field goals, five of those from beyond the arc, and a perfect 10 of 10 at the line. Also in double figures was Madi Miller with 10.

“Sophomore Addi Lauritzen took on a tough assignment and had to guard Dayana Haslett who is leading the NTC in points per game,” said St. Anthony Coach Aaron Rios. “Her defense was excellent and her will to take on the challenge was awesome. 

“Brownstown is a top team in the state for a reason. They are very well coached and disciplined ball club. It was an exciting night for our girls basketball and it feels good for our kids to be back-to-back champs.”

The third place contest went to Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg with a 47-45 win over Altamont.

Altamont edged out to a 14-12 opening quarter lead and led 26-22 at halftime.

Windsor/Stew-Stras came back with a 13-7 third period to move ahead 35-33. The two teams played to a 12-12 final quarter.

Kendra Hayes led the winners with 15 points as she hit five field goals, two of those from three-point range, and was three of five at the line. Ellie Wittenberg chipped in with 12.

Altamont was led by Kaylee Lurkins with seven field goals and seven of eight at the line for 21.

The consolation championship went to Dieterich over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 49-46.

CHBC actually held the opening quarter lead at 13-11 and the halftime lead at 28-24. The Bobcats were still ahead after three quarters 39-34.

But here came Dieterich. The Maroons finished with the victory on a 15-7 final quarter run.

Kady Tegeler led the team in scoring with 16 points on seven field goals and two of three at the line. Brittney Niemerg added 11.

CHBC was led by Macee Rodman with 16 on seven field goal and two of three at the line. Ethel Stuckemeyer chipped in with 10.

The seventh place game went to Neoga over North Clay, 49-39.

Neoga held a 26-16 halftime lead then held off North Clay in the final quarter.

Brynn Richards scored 26 points on six field goals, three of those from beyond the arc, and 11 of 16 at the line. Atalie Osboron contributed 16 points.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Nancy Ruholl (St. Anthony) who was named the Most Valuable Player, Dayana Haslett (Brownstown/St. Elmo), Macee Rodman (Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City), Bryn Richards (Neoga), Addi Nuxoll (St. Anthony), Kaylee Lurkins (Altamont), Ellie Wittenberg (Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg), Brittney Niemerg (Dieterich), Kylie Osteen (Altamont), Madi Millr (Brownstown/St. Elmo), Adysen Rios (St. Anthony) and Samantha Hayes (Windsor/Stewardsom-Strasburg).

At Vandalia

Effingham High School captured the championship of the Vandalia Tournament Saturday.

The Hearts edged out to a 13-11 opening quarter lead as Averie Wolfe knocked in three baskets, one a three-pointer, and was one of two at the line for eight points while Bella Austin hit a three-pointer and finished with five in the quarter.

The lead went to 28-24 at halftime. Alyssa Martin scored five while Sidney Donaldson and Austin put in four each.

The Hearts continued on with a 10-7 third quarter. Tessa Raddatz and Austin connected from beyond the arc for a three-pointer each.

The Hearts finished strong with a 14-9 final period. Donaldson put in eight on three baskets and two of two at the line.

Three EHS players hit double figures. Austin led the way with 14 points on six field goals, two of those three-pointers. Donaldson and Wolfe added 12 each.

In the third place contest, Wesclin won over Salem, 42-39.

Vandalia tallied a 42-36 win over Mattoon for fifth place.

Cumberland finished second at the Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Pirates fell to Sullivan, 52-42.

The two teams played to a 10-10 opening quarter tie before Cumberland moved ahead 24-23 at halftime.

Sullivan came back with a 15-12 third quarter but Sullivan moved into a 38-26 third quarter lead and finished with a 14-6 run.

Jude Miller scored 12 for Cumberland on five field goals, two of those three-pointers. Alysa Dittamore added 11 and Suzy Fritts 10.

At Highland

Teutopoils finished sixth out of 16 teams at the 38th Annual Apex Network Physical Therapy Highland Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes lost to Edwardsville 60-41 in the fifth place contest.

Edwardsville ran out to an 11-3 opening quarter lead and led 25-14 at halftime. The squad held a 43-29 lead going into the final quarter.

Anna Probst was the lone T-town player in double figures with 11 on three trifectas and two of four at the line. Kelsey Niemerg chipped in with nine. Malea Helmink led in rebounds with 10 and had one steal. Chloe Probst also had one steal.

O’Fallon won the championship of the tournament by edging Nashville, 53-52.

Third place went to Breese Central over Breese Mater Dei, 61-51. The consolation championship was claimed by Belleville East over Chatham Glenwood, 55-44.
