CARROLLTON — Sigel St. Michael lost in opening round play of the Class 8-1A State Volleyball Tournament last weekend.

LaSalle Trinity Catholic won over the Sharpshooters, 25-17, 25-18.

Sadie Wiessing led St. Michael in aces with two. Anna Holley had five service points.

In other matches, Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell won over Washington St. Patrick, 25-16, 25-21, Rantoul St. Malachy downed Kewanee Visitation 25-13 25-23 and Carrollton St. Johns downed Grant Park, 25-12, 25-17.

In semifinal play, Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell defeated LaSalle Trinity Catholic, 20-25, 25-21, 25-13 and Carrollton St. John won over Rantoul St. Malachy, 25-17, 25-15.

In the third place match, LaSalle Trinity Catholic defeated Rantoul St. Malachy 25-14, 25-15 and Carrollton St. John downed Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell to win the championship, 25-20, 25-25.

St. Michael ended its season with a 23-3 record.

 

At Regionals

Stewardson Trinity won the championship of the eighth-grade regional last Thursday.

Four teams competed in the regional, Stewardson Trinity, St. Peter Trinity, Patoka and Iuka. In the first match, St Peter defeated Iuka in two sets. The second match went to Stewardson Trinity over Patoka, 25-10, 25-9. In the championship, Stewardson Trinity downed St. Peter Trinity, 25-10, 25-17.

“We played some really good volleyball,” said Stewardson Trinity Coach Tammy Manhart. “I was so happy with the way the girls played. We have been struggilng for two or three weeks, just not playing our best ball. The girls seem to be back on track.”

Stewardson Trinity will play in the SIJHAA State Tournament in Herrin this coming Saturday. Sixteen teams qualify and by the end of the day, a State champion will be crowned.

“We look forward to an exciting day of volleyball,” said Coach Manhart.
