Michael J. “Mike” Brummer (77) of Bishop Creek

Michael J. Brummer, 77 of Bishop Creek, rural Dieterich, died Wednesday morning, April 16, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Bishop Creek, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday at the church. Memorial donations may be given to the Order of Franciscans or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Michael was born July 22, 1947 to Raymond and Pauline (Schumacher) Brummer. He married Donna Schoenekase on July 20,1974 in Liberty, Illinois, and she survives. Michael was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church of St. Isidore Parish. He was the Mayor of Bishop Creek for 25 prosperous years. Michael played a critical role in getting water to rural residents across several counties and was a founding board member of the E.J. Water Board, and served for 15 years. He was a member of the Effingham County Farm Bureau Board, Pork Producers Board, Catholic Knights and Ladies of Illinois Board, Associate of the Hospital Sister of St. Francis of Springfield, Order of Franciscan, and Knight of Columbus Member Council 2874. He spent 60 years spreading Christmas cheer to young and old across Effingham County wearing red and white, a jolly smile, a twinkle in his eye, and a jingle in his step. Michael enjoyed nature, especially at his Hobby Farm. He felt closest to God at his Hobby Farm in his porch swing looking at God’s beautiful creation. He spent many years coaching young boys’ baseball at Bishop Creek. Michael was a man of many talents, even writing a book or two. Michael was a strong believer in faith, family, and fun. He will be sadly missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, of 50 years, of rural Dieterich; his children, Paul (Beth), Joe (Marcy), both of Dieterich, Andy (Jalyssa) of Stillwater, OK, Dan, Mary (Ken) Lucy, Jim (Dawn), all of Dieterich, and Rose (Michael) Duran of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Whitley, Travis, Randy, Trent, Olivia, Levi, Grace Brummer, Leah, Lane, Laurie, Lyla Brummer, Delayne, Sylas, Atley Brummer, Veronica, and Cynthia Miramontes, Amber, Wade, Chet, Rave, Lucy Brummer, Arianna, Wesley, and Lincoln Duran; siblings, Kenny (Judy) and Mark (Linda) Brummer of Bishop, Sister Renita Brummer, OSF of St. Louis, Betty (Bob) Zumbahlen, and Maria (Sam) Probst of Sigel, and Theresa (Larry) Funneman of Teutopolis.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, sister Renita Brummer, niece Dana Brummer, nephew Michael Zumbahlen, and mother and father-in-law, Paul and Lucille Schoenekase.
