Gerald J. Pruemer, affectionately known as Pop by his family and friends, left this world on April 2, 2025, at the age of 89. His final days were spent at the Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham, surrounded by the love of family.

Born on October 15, 1935, in Teutopolis, Illinois, Gerald was the son of Harry B. and Clara (Schneck) Pruemer. His early years in the close-knit community laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work, resilience, and a deep commitment to family. On February 27, 1965, he married the love of his life, Carolyn F. Scholes, and together they built a legacy of love and laughter until her passing on April 26, 2017. Gerald’s life was marked by the joy of fatherhood, as he raised his son, Jerry D. (Cheryl) Pruemer, with the same values of integrity and strength that defined him. His pride and joy extended to his three grandchildren, Zachary Daniel Pruemer, Jacob Andrew (Holly) Pruemer, both of Teutopolis, and Meghann Leigh (Nathan) Day of Effingham. The sparkle in his eye shone even brighter with the arrival of his four great-grandchildren, Maylee Ann Pruemer, Wylie Jane Pruemer, Sullivan “Sully” Jones Day, and the anticipation of Baby Day expected in August. Gerald’s work ethic was unparalleled, having served honorably in the United States Navy before embarking on a diverse career that included working on the pipeline, at Boos Block Factory, and maintaining the highways of Illinois. Despite the many jobs he held, his favorite role was undoubtedly that of grandfather, cherishing every moment spent with Zachary, Jacob, and Meghann. Pop was a man of strong convictions, his stubbornness a testament to his unwavering principles. He was a man you could love with fervor, challenge with respect, and at times, find yourself at odds with, but his presence was always a force of certainty in an uncertain world.

His passing marks the end of an era, as Gerald was the last surviving member of his generation, predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Carolyn, and all of his siblings: Clarence “Bud” Pruemer, Herbert Pruemer, Edward Pruemer, Jerome “Rome” Pruemer, David Pruemer, Henry “Butch” Pruemer, Harriet “Sis” Borries, and Dorothy Pruemer, who died in infancy.

In accordance with his wishes, Gerald will be cremated, and no services will be held. Lockart-Green Funeral Home is assisting the family. Family and friends are invited to light a candle or share a story by clicking here.
