Samuel D. Buzzard Jr., known affectionately to friends and family as Sam, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, at the Lakeland Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Effingham, Illinois.
Sam was born on January 14, 1936, in Effingham, the son of Samuel and Minnie (Muchow) Buzzard. Sam spent his entire life in the heart of Stewardson, his life was a testament to his dedication to his community, his love for his family, and his passion for the world around him. Sam’s educational journey began at Stewardson-Strasburg High School. He furthered his studies at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. His commitment to his country was evident in his service as a veteran of the United States Army.
In 1965, Sam married his beloved wife, Susan Heimlich, and their enduring partnership was blessed with two children, Brad (Dora) Buzzard of Sherman and Christy (Terry) Pulsford of Liberty Township, Ohio. Their family grew to include their adored grandchildren, Melanie Buzzard, Ty, Tara, and Seth Pulsford. While his parents preceded him in death, Sam’s legacy continues through his loving family who will miss him deeply.
Professionally, Sam dedicated his career to the State of Illinois, working with the Department of Children and Family Services. His service extended beyond his profession as he was an active member of the United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #541, and the Historical Society—all in Stewardson. Sam also served on the Stewardson-Strasburg School Board and was involved in numerous other civic organizations, contributing significantly to the community he loved. Sam’s interests were as diverse as they were passionate. He had a special place in his heart for animals and enjoyed caring for them. Traveling and visiting with people were among his favorite activities, as Sam never met a stranger. His love for history was not only a hobby but also a contribution to the community, particularly as an integral part of the Stewardson Centennial Celebration. His warm spirit and enthusiasm for life touched many and will be remembered fondly.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Samuel D. Buzzard Jr. will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Brummerstedt Funeral Home in Stewardson with Pastor Steve Harder officiating. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation, which will begin at 1:00 p.m. and continue until the time of service. Sam will be laid to rest at Stewardson Cemetery. Memorials may be given in Sam’s honor to the donor’s favorite charity. Brummerstedt Funeral Home in Stewardson is assisting the family.
