Gary Hannaman age 86, passed away January 1, 2025, at his home in Newton, Illinois.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Gary will be held at 12 noon Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the Crain Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of services Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Wheeler Cemetery, Wheeler, Illinois with military rites being offered by Jasper Post No. 20 of the American Legion.
Gary was born on December 29, 1938, in Jasper County, Illinois the son of Henry Edward Martin and Bethel (Hoopengarner) Hannaman. Gary graduated from Wheeler Grade School and Newton High School with the Class of 1956. Following high school, Gary served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserves. On June 10, 1961, Gary married Betty L. Bowyer in the First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Carmel, Illinois. The couple shared fifty-eight years of marriage before Betty’s passing on June 14, 2019. Gary spent his life in sales. In his early years, he sold insurance and was a district sales manager with Country Companies. He worked for the Kennedy Grain Elevator and later sold John Deere farm equipment for Romack Motors in Newton. Together with his brother Carl, Gary owned and operated the Hannaman Brothers Oil Company. The brothers, together with Max Short, purchased McClane Motor Sales; which the brothers later sold Max. Gary continued in sales with Webster Ford until his retirement. Gary was a faithful member of the Kedron United Methodist Church. He was a 50 year member of the Winterrowd Masonic Lodge No. 664 A.F. & A.M., a sixty-two year member of the Elks Lodge No. 1188, Robinson, the Jasper Post No. 20 of the American Legion. In his early years in his free time, Gary was an expert marksman trap shooting and a member of the Sportsman’s Club, and was an avid fisherman and member of the Bass Club. During his retirement years he could be found reading, studying, and watching the stock market.
Gary will be loved and remembered by his children JoBeth (John) Geier and Ed (Kim) Hannaman both of Newton; grandchildren, Tom (Julie) Dickerson of Lancaster, IN, Garrett (Sacha) Dickerson of Newton, Brianne (Gene) Birch of Newton, Caroline (Casey) Lamb of Columbus, GA and Cameron Hannaman of Columbus, GA; step-grandchildren, Chad (Dani) Nosbisch of North Port, FL, Nikki (Mitch) Lustig of Dieterich and Mitchell (Shelby) Nosbisch of Edgewood; 6 great and 8 step-great grandchildren and sister Susan Hannaman of Newton.
His parents, wife Betty and brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Janie Hannaman and Tom and Jane Ann Hannaman, preceded him in death.
