Bradley L. Phegley, affectionately known as Brad to his loved ones and friends, passed away on December 6, 2024, at the age of 67.
Born on April 10, 1957, in Shelbyville, Illinois, to Jack Adrian and D. Kathryn (Alday) Phegley, Brad’s life was characterized by his dedication to service, his adventurous spirit, and his warmth that drew people to him. A graduate of Shelbyville High School in 1975, Brad furthered his education by earning an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Lake Land College. His passion for serving others led him to a distinguished career in law enforcement. Brad served in the United States Army, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism. Following his military service, he dedicated 28 years to the Illinois State Police, an illustrious career marked by integrity and commitment. Brad also contributed to his county as a Shelby County Deputy Sheriff, Chief Deputy Coroner for eight years, and Coroner for four years. His recent re-election as Coroner was a testament to the trust and respect he garnered from his community. In addition to his law enforcement career, Brad was a valued member of the Lockart-Green Funeral Homes team for over 25 years. His involvement with the community extended to his membership in the Windsor Christian Church, Altamont Masonic Lodge #533, and the Shelbyville Horseshoe Club. Brad’s life of service was a beacon of inspiration to all who knew him. Brad’s zest for life was evident in his wide array of interests. Whether it was playing pickleball, beekeeping, pitching horseshoes, or tending to his hobby farm, Brad embraced life with enthusiasm. His love for the outdoors was unmatched; he was a skilled hunter, camper, and fisherman. An avid sports fan, Brad loyally supported the Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks. His adventures took him from the skies as a licensed pilot to the depths of the ocean as a certified scuba diver. Brad’s love for Lake Shelbyville was well known, as were his fishing trips to Ontario and the Great Lakes. His adventurous spirit was matched only by his kindness and his ability to make lasting connections with people.
Brad is survived by a loving family that includes his son, Brent Phegley of Shelbyville; sister, Debbie Maretti of Decatur; his significant other, Michelle “Shellie” Weber of Windsor; sister-in-law, Barb Phegley of Shelbyville; his cherished grandchildren, Kaylee (Austin) Binnion and Jack Phegley, both of Shelbyville. His legacy continues through his nieces and nephews, Jason (Carrie) Maretti of Pawnee, Krista (Ryan) Hendrix of Shelbyville, Lori Ruot of Shelbyville, and Angela (Greg) Crowe of Decatur, as well as his adored great-nieces and nephews, Haley, Emily, Kelsey, Kyle, Emma, Chase, Trey, Ryan, Kathryn and Sophie. Brad’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of his many friends who were like family to him.
