The Effingham Unit 40 Board of Education Monday voted to authorize and provide for the issuance of $36,220,000 in debt certificates that would begin the process of constructing a classroom building and improve district facilities.

The Board has considered the construction of a Grades K-2 building. The next step would be to issue up to $55 million in bonds, which could come at the Board’s May meeting.

Board members reviewed two tentative sites for the building, both already owned by Unit 40. One site is on the Central School property; the other is west of the Effingham High School athletic complex. No decision was reached Monday night.

Superintendent Andy Johnson said that the portable classrooms to be located at South Side School are to arrive May 21, 22 or 23.

The Board swore in the four members elected earlier this month. They are newcomer Brandon Duncan and returning members Chad Thompson, Erica Boone and Desha Wear. Thompson was elected to a two-year unexpired term; the other three were elected to full four-year terms. Duncan replaces Steve Bone on the Board. Bone did not seek re-election after serving 10 years on the Board.

Jill Wendling was elected to another two-year term as Board President, Chad Thompson as Vice President, and Jane Willenborg as Secretary.
