 County Board Allocates Funding for Purchase of New Home for Morgue

Effingham County Board members Monday approved using $300,000 to purchase the future home of a county morgue. The capital improvement funding will pay for the acquisition of the former Pet Feed Store building at St. Anthony and Merchant. The City has already approved a special use permit for the facility.

County Coroner Kim Rhodes believes the project should be finalized in the next couple of weeks.

The Board approved Karen Feldkamp as a part-time hazardous materials emergency planner, and approved four fire district trustees including Gary Horn at Dieterich, Steven Rudolphi at Watson, William Evans at Tri-County, and Brian Lustig at Altamont.

Board members proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, National Police Week in May, and Law Day on Thursday, May 1. The Board also approved a joint funding agreement for resurfacing South Altamont, and also approved the City of Effingham adding anchored benches to the historic courtyard grounds downtown.

The Board disbursed $9,000 in hotel-motel funding for the annual Mill Road Thresherman Association; $9,000 in hotel-motel funding for the Effingham County Fair for a sponsorship and other expenses; returned $11,400 in ARPA funding from a childcare research committee gap scholarship; approved $3,040 in ARPA fund allocation to repair the north approach sidewalk the historic gazebo and courtyard project; disburses $566.32 in capital improvement funds for health department infrastructure improvements; and disbursed $3,750 in capital improvement funds for first floor window caulking at the County Office Building.

Board members approved $1.000 in hotel/motel funds for the Village of Montrose for a More 4 Montrose Rodeo, to be held Saturday, June 7 at Montrose Village Park. Trisha Funneman of the More 4 Montrose group said the proceeds will fund future events in the village such as a concession stand in the park, repairs to the old bank building, and welcome signs leading into the village.
