A house fire involving a death is being investigated in Newton.

Wade Township Fire Protection District Chief Gary Lindeman said the fire at 508 Liberty Street occurred around 5:50pm Sunday. Lindeman said as they were fighting the fire a body was found in a bedroom of the house. The name of the woman killed is not yet being released, but Lindeman said she lived in the house.

Jasper County Coroner Jason Meyer said a representative of the Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene Sunday evening.

Lindeman said the fire was confined to two rooms of the house, but there was also smoke and water damage. He estimated the damage to the house at $30,000 and to the contents at $25,000. Lindeman said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Wade Township fought the fire and had it under control within five to 10 minutes. Richland County firefighters provided station coverage in case of another fire.
