 Jobless Rates Up in November Statewide, Improved Though Locally

Illinois’ jobless rate rose from 4.1% in November 2023 to 4.8% in November of this year.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported the jobless rate rose despite generating about 36,000 more jobs over the 12-month period.

Locally, the Effingham County jobless rate improved slightly, from 3.3% in November 2023 to 3.2% in November 2024. Total nonfarm employment in the Effingham area rose by 325 jobs. Gains were seen in Leisure/Hospitality, Trade-Transportation-Utilities, Professional and Business Services, Government, and Other Services. Payrolls were unchanged in Natural Resources-Mining, Construction, and Financial Activities sectors. Payroll job losses occurred in Manufacturing, Information, and Private Education-Health Services.

Area counties and their jobless numbers:

Coles–4%, up from 3.8% a year ago

Cumberland–3.3%, up from 3.1%

Shelby–4.3%, up from 3.3%

Clay–5%, down from 5.3%

Fayette–4.3%, down from 4.5%

Jasper–3.8%, down from 3.9%
