MATTOON — Coach Jeff Schafer’s crew zipped out to a 16-4 opening quarter lead on Mattoon and went on to claim a 63-21 Apollo Conference victory Thursday evening in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.
Tessa Raddatz got the Hearts off in the right direction with a two-pointer and two baskets from beyond the arc for eight. Bella Austin added a three-pointer and a free throw and the Hearts were up 16-4.
EHS went on a big run in the second quarter. Six players scored with Saige Althoff leading the way with seven points and Raddatz adding five more to her total. EHS held a 39-6 halftime lead.
The Hearts finished with two players in double figures and nine total scoring in the contest. Raddatz led the way with 15 points on five field goals and two of two at the line. Althoff chipped in with 10 and Sidney Donaldson added nine.
EHS hit 53.3 percent from the free throw line with eight of 15. They finished with a 42.1 percent from the field.
The Hearts improved to 2-0 in the conference and are now 8-2 overall.
Mattoon dropped to 0-1 in the conference and 2-7 overall.
Effingham won the junior varsity contest, 55-28 and is now 8-2.
There will be a celebration Saturday at the Hearts game.
Everyone is invited to Effingham High School’s celebration of Women in Sports over the last 50 years.
The event will be held at Effingham High School Gymnasium between the junior varsity and varsity girls basketball game as the Hearts play host to Mahomet-Seymour. The junior varsity contest begins at 1 p.m.
During the celebration, the basketball jersey of Blair Hardiek, who played from 1999 to 2003, will be retired.
There will be a 30 minute reception in the EHS Cafetorium immediately following the varsity game.

At St. Anthony
Effingham St. Anthony cruised along. The Bulldogs easily downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City as the two National Trail Conference teams met Thursday evening, 61-18.
The Bulldogs, ranked second in the latest Class 1A State poll, ran out to a 24-4 opening quarter lead as Nancy Ruholl went on a 21 point run. Ruholl was unstoppable, connecting on three from beyond the arc and six regular baskets for 21 of her team’s 24 points.
St. Anthony held a 37-14 halftime lead.
Ruholl finished with 15 field goals, three of those from three-point land, and one of two at the line for 34 points. She was the lone Bulldogs player in double figures. Addi Nuxoll chipped in with nine points on four field goals and a free throw.
Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was led by Macee Rodman with 11 points on five field goals, one a three-pointer.
St. Anthony now sports a 4-0 National Trail Conference mark and a 9-1 overall record. The Bulldogs will return to action Monday where they will play host to Teutopolis beginning at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity contest. The Wooden Shoes come into the meeting ranked third in the Class 2A State poll and also with a 9-1 record.
The game will be head on KJ Country 102.3.

Neoga ran out to an 18-8 opening quarter lead and went on to defeat Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville, 53-38 Thursday evening.
Brynn Richards led the way for Neoga with 26 points on 12 field goals and two of two at the line. When she connected on her second basket in the opening quarter, Richards reached 1,000 career points.
Atalie Osborn also finished in double figures with six field goals and four of four at the line for 18. The Indians held a 25-16 halftime lead and led 35-21 going into the final quarter.
Neoga won the junior varsity game, 49-25.
Neoga improved to 6-4 on the season and returns to action today, traveling to Cumberland.

Teutopolis played host to Nokomis and handed the visitors a 65-30 loss Thursday evening.
The Wooden Shoes ran out to a 25-4 opening quarter lead behind Chloe Probst who connected on a three-pointer, two free throws and three regular baskets for 11 points.
Five other players scored in that opening run.
T-town held a 35-11 halftime lead and went on a 21-6 third quarter run as Malea Helmink scored six points and Molly Ruholl five.
NIne players tallied in the contest for the Shoes. C. Probst led the way with five field goals, one a three-pointer, and five of six at the line for 16. M. Ruholl and Helmink scored nine each and Allie Ruholl chipped in with eight.
Kelsey Niemerg led in the way on the boards with eight. C. Probst had five steals as T-town finished with 19 total steals. Anna Probst had two assists.

Brownstown/St. Elmo and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, two National Trail Conference teams, clashed Thursday evening. BSE came out a 68-46 winner.
BSE’s Dayana Haslett hit three trifectas for nine points on the opening quarter while Presley Williams nailed four baskets for eight as the Bombers ran out to a 23-9 opening quarter lead.
Haslett added on six more points in the second quarter for 15 by halftime and BSE led 37-20. Kendra Hayes connected on three trifectas for nine in the quarter.
BSE then had a 19-9 third quarter run to lead 56-29. Haslett hit four more baskets and a three-pointer for 11.
Haslett finished with 28 points on eight field goals, four from three-point range. Also in double digits were Williams and Addie Sasse with 13 each.
Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Sam Hayes with 18 points on seven field goals, two of those three-pointers, and two of four at the line. Also in double figures was K. Hayes with four three-pointers for 12.
The Hatchets won the junior varsity game, 24-22. Clarissa Johnson scored 10 to lead the winners.
BSE was led by Audria Logue and Lydia Dush with six each.

Dieterich trailed Martinsville 10-3 after the opening quarter and 16-8 at halftime.
But the Maroons came back in the second half with a 27-10 run to pull out a 35-26 victory.
Kady Tegeler, who scored only two points in the opening half, cut loose with six points in the third quarter and seven in the final period to lead the comeback and finish with 15 points on five field goals and five of eight at the line.
Also in double digits was Addison Miller with 11.
In the junior varsity game, Dieterich was a 37-12 winner.
The Maroons were led by Addi Huber with 11 points and Lena Goebel and Cassidy Goebel with eight each.

Nokomis edged out to a 7-5 opening quarter lead then had a 17-9 second period to lead 24-14 at halftime.
The two teams played to a 17-17 second half.
One player finished in double figures for Altamont. Avery Aldrich led the way with five field goals and two of four at the line for 12 points. Kylie Osteen finished with nine.
In junior varsity action, Nokomis was a 36-27 winner.
Reagan Kuenstler scored 12 for Altamont.

South Central played host to Ramsey and the Rams went home with a 43-18 victory Thursday evening.
Ramsey took a 17-6 opening quarter lead but did not score in the second quarter as the Cougars pulled within 17-13 at halftime.
Ramsey then had a 14-2 third quarter and finished with the victory.
The Rams were led by Mia Waggoner with 10 points and Kelli Cook and Jenni Mezo with nine each.
South Central was led by Baylee Brown with five points.
