EHS Beats Dieterich, Neoga, Altamont, Cumberland Nab High School Baseball Victories

DIETERICH — This game started with a 1-1 opening inning tie.

Effingham High School’s Colton Webb hit a solo homer for a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame.

Dieterich came back as Gavin Meinhart drew a walk and was singled home by Andrew Hall.

But the Hearts started putting it altogether with a two-run second, a two-run third and four runs in the fifth.

With two outs, Nick Martin and Braydon Tucker had back-to-back singles in the second inning. Wyatt Hayes then followed with a double, driving in both runners for a 3-1 lead.

The lead went to 5-1 in the third. Carter Braddy and Webb drew back-to-back walks. Jude Traub hit a sacrifice fly.

Effingham continued denting the plate with four more in the fifth. Braddy led off with a double. With one out, Traub drew a walk and Max Seachrist got on base on a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Martin walked and Tucker followed with a single.

Tucker earned the win for Effingham. The hurler allowed one run and five hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked four.

The Hearts piled up nine hits. Hayes, batting ninth in the lineup, led the team with a single, two doubles and two RBI. Braddy had a double and drew two walks. Webb hit a home run and drew a walk.

Effingham improved to 7-4.

Andrew Hall led the Maroons with two singles and an RBI and Justin Boerngen had three singles.

The Maroons had patience at the plate, earning six walks. They also went on a stealing spree with five stolen bases.

Dieterich dropped to 2-6 on the season.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony played host to Mount Zion at Evergreen Hollow Park. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they fell in a 6-0 contest Thursday.

Mount Zion tallied a single run in the third. Once the Braves found the plate, they tallied two more in the second, one in the fifth and finished out with two in the seventh.

The Braves had five hits led by E. Howley with a single, double and an RBI. A. Weaver added a single and an RBI.

St. Anthony finished with two hits, both singles off the bat of Aiden Lauritzen.

The Bulldogs finished with three errors.

A. Tay took the win on the mound for Mount Zion. He went four innings giving up one hit, three walks while striking out five.

At Neoga

Neoga moved into a 3-1 lead in the second and went on for a 9-1 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Thursday.

The Bobcats held a 1-0 lead in the first inning before Neoga came back with the three runs in the second then tacked on four more in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Neoga had four hits led by Colin Blazich with a home run and four RBI. Matt Propst added two singles and two RBI and Garrett Ballinger a single and an RBI.

Blazich also led on the mound. He went the first five innings, allowing, one run on two hits, three walks while striking out seven.

Ballinger came on to finish out the final two innings, giving up only one hit, two walks while striking out three.

CHBC was led by Hunter Pope with a single and an RBI and Ben Askins and Isaac Wells with a single each.

Neoga improves to 7-2 on the season.

At Altamont

Altamont  ended this game with 11 runs on 10 hits in beating Vandalia, 11-3 Thursday.

The Vandals took a 1-0 lead and pushed that to 2-0 in the top of the fourth.

But Altamont put together six runs in the bottom of the fourth and pushed five more across home plate in the fifth.

Cooper McManaway led the hitting attack with two singles, a double and two RBI while Kade Milleville added a single, double and three RBI. Brayden Elam contributed a double and two RBI. Dyson Wagner and Blake Berg finished with a single and an RBI each. Zaine Miller and Will Reardon had an RBI each.

Carson Milleville held the Vandals in check in the first five innings for the win on the mound. He gave up two runs on four hits. He did not walk a batter and had five strikeouts. Z. Miller came on two go the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits, no walks and striking out four.

At Altamont

Cumberland opened up an 8-1 first inning lead and ended this game in the fourth by a 24-7 tally over Unity Christian Thursday.

The Pirates finished with 16 hits and saw 17 players enter the game.

Maddox Miller had two singles, a double and three RBI while Wyatt Watkins had a single, double and two RBI. Hudson McElravy added two singles and four RBI. Grady Jones and Isaac Venatta finished with two singles and three RBI each. Bryson Weber hit a single, double and drove in a run. Gavin Keyser and Gage Rhodes had a single and an RBI each and Gavin Wormhoud and Lance Lock finished with an RBI each.

McElravy was the winning pitcher. He went the first three innings, giving up three runs on two hits

Pana claimed a shortened game over Brownstown/St. Elmo, 10-2 Thursday. The game ended with two outs in the top of the sixth due to lightning.

The Panthers tallied single runs in the second, third and four innings to lead 3-2. Pana then had a seven-run fifth.

Corey Hoopingarner and Lane Stine were the lone BSE batters with a hit, a single each.

Brownstown/St. Elmo dropped to 3-6 on the season and returns to action  Saturday at Wayne City.

Richland County, Olney scored three runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 4-1 win over Newton Thursday.

Richland County led 1-0 in the third. Newton tied in the sixth before Richland County won.

Newton had five hits led by Drake Wolf with two singles and David Baltzell with a single and an RBI.

Richland County had eight hits led by Matty Sanders with a single, double and an RBI, Owen Cycholl with two singles and two RBI and Cooper Hires with two singles and an RBI.
