 City of Effingham Announces Procedures for Those Interested in Filling Upcoming Council Vacancy

We reported earlier this week on the resignation of Merv Gillenwater as a member of the Effingham City Council, effective April 30.

The City of Effingham has released information on the selection process of someone to succeed Gillenwater. Here is the information:

The City Council of the City of Effingham is seeking to fill a vacant seat for City Commissioner. The Commissioner appointed to this vacant seat will serve the remainder of the current four-year term, which will expire in May, 2027.

The City Commissioner will serve as one of five on the City Council, which includes four Commissioners and the Mayor.

The City Council meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m.

Submit a Letter of Interest:

If you are interested in serving as Commissioner, please submit a letter of interest which includes the following information:

1) Your full name;

2) Physical and mailing address;

3) Your personal qualifications to serve as Commissioner;

4) Describe your knowledge of Effingham;

5) Describe why you are interested in serving as a Commissioner;

6) Provide proof that you have been a qualified voter of Effingham for at least one (1) year prior to appointment. See Article II, Sec. 2-89 of the Municipal Code (https://library.municode.com/il/effingham/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=MUCO_CH2AD_ARTIICO_DIV3RURE_SD1GE_S2-89QU)

Submit your letter of interest to City Administrator Steven W. Miller by Wednesday, April 30th, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at City Hall (201 E. Jefferson Avenue – Effingham), or via email at
