Fire damaged an apartment building in Mattoon early Monday.
A Mattoon police officer on routine patrol noticed smoke in the 1400 block of Charleston Avenue shortly before 4am. The officer found the smoke was coming from an apartment building at 1401 Charleston Avenue. Officers alerted the residents of the other apartments in the building and got them safely evacuated from the structure.
Mattoon firefighters were notified and reached the scene four minutes later at 3:52am. They found an active fire on the second floor. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes. The building was checked but the fire did not spread out of the one apartment.
Mattoon Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss said the affected apartment was under renovation and that no one was living in the unit.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still being determined.
All units cleared the scene by 6:30am.
