NEWTON — Newton scored all of its runs in the first four innings then had to hold off a charging Effingham to claim a 10-9 high school softball victory Monday.
The Eagles struck early, tallying three runs in the first inning and three in the second. The Hearts pulled within 6-4 in the top of the third but Newton scored a run in the bottom of the frame to lead 7-4.
Effingham pulled back within 7-6 in the top of the fourth but the Eagles moved ahead 10-6 in the bottom of the frame.
EHS again attempted a comeback with two in the sixth and one in the seventh only to fall short.
Both teams had eight hits. Newton finished with two home runs. Bailee Frichtl had a double, home run and drove in three while Sally Mahaffey added a solo homer. Addy Odell finished with two singles while Allie Stanley added two RBI and Audrie Reich had a single and an RBI.
Effingham had the big bats out with six home runs on the day. Keagyn Koenig led the way with two home runs and four RBI. Natalie Armstrong had two home runs, both solo shots. Sidney Donaldson had a single, home run and two RBI and Mya Harvey hit a solo homer.
Saige Althoff went two innings to pick up the loss on the mound. She allowed six runs on four hits, three walks while striking out one.
Newton’s Amelia Collins went the distance for the pitching victory. She gave up nine runs on eight hits, one walk and struck out two.

Effingham St. Anthony took a 4-0 opening inning lead and went on to end this contest over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in the fourth inning, 16-1 Monday.
The Bulldogs finished with 11 hits. Julia Schultz had a double, triple and drove in six runs to lead the way. Lilly Gannaway had three singles and an RBI while Adysen Rios added two singles and an RBI. Sadie Vineyard finished with a single and an RBI.
Nancy Ruholl was the winning pitcher. She went 1.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit, four walks and striking out two. Camille Wines came on to go 2.1 innings, giving up two hits, no walks while striking out two.
The Bobcats had three hits, singles by Ryleigh Sarver, Birgen Schlanser and Jayla Arnett. Schlanser added an RBI.

This was a one-run game as Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg picked up a 1-0 victory over South Central Monday.
The Hatchets scored the lone run in the fifth inning. WSS had six hits led by Samantha Hayes with two singles and Alaira Friese with a single that drove in the lone run.
S. Hayes was the winner on the mound. She went the distance allowing no runs on two hits, no walks while striking out six.
The Hatchets return to action today hosting Pana at Windsor.
South Central’s hits, both singles, came off the bats of Maddie Peddicord and Abi Shuler.
Peddicord went the seven innings allowing one run on six hits, one walk while striking out eight.

Casey-Westfield scored a lone run in the second then tallied what would prove to be the winning run in the top of the sixth as the Warriors edged Teutopolis, 2-1 Monday.
The Warriors stood at 1-0 in the second and added on the other run. T-town scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth.
Arhianna Bonds led Casey-Westfield with a single and double while Hannah Schackmann and Lucy Moore added a double each.
Teutopolis’ Kera Hartke had a double while Kayleigh Zerrusen had a single that drove in the lone run.
Ava Goble went seven innings allowing one run on three hits and three walks. She kept the Wooden Shoes off the bases with 14 strikeouts.
