Elizabeth Louise “Betty” Ochs, age 93, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 7:21 PM – Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Olney, Illinois, surrounded by her family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM- Thursday, March 20, 2025, with Father Pawel Luczak celebrating mass.   Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:30 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Ste, Marie, Illinois.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Sainte Marie, Illinois.  Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois.  In loving memory of Betty, memorials may be made to the Jasper County Cancer Fund.

Elizabeth was born in Wendelin, Illinois, on December 5, 1931, the daughter of Coelestin and Margaret (Kessler) Nix. She married Donald Joseph Ochs on October 25, 1955, and he preceded her in death on April 12, 2020. Betty was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ste. Marie, Illinois. She was strong in her faith and dedicated to serving within the parish. She was proud of her work in the refinishing of the church pews during the remodeling. She was a member of the Altar Society and the Ste. Marie American Legion Auxiliary Post #932 and past president of both. Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and, later, her great grandchildren. Her love of flowers was evident in her vibrant flower beds and the amount of time she spent attendingto them. She also did beautiful needlework and took pride in the many quilts she made.

Betty is survived by: Children – Cynthia (George) Backstein of Springfield, Illinois, Beverly (Dennis) Fritschle of Cave in Rock, Illinois and Kenneth (Anne) Ochs of Newton, Illinois, Grandchildren – James (Sasha) Backstein, Brandon Backstein, Brian Backstein, Adam (Aisling) Fritschle, Jacob Fritschle, Margaret Ochs, Nicholas Ochs, Adrienne (Jordan) Roberts, Matthias Ochs, Mary Ochs, Veronica (Albert) Yu, Catherine Ochs and, as well as 13 great grandchildren Sister-in-law – Zeoy Nix.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter Jennifer, brothers Delbert (Mary) Nix, Norbert (LaVaun) Nix, Joseph Nix and sister Georgiann (Herman) Kuhl and great grandchildren Lucas James Backstein and Hannah Roberts.
