James J. Poynter, 89, of Effingham, IL, formerly of Little Rock, AR, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Willowbrook Memory Care Residences in Effingham.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham prior to the funeral. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 19, 2024 at Calvary Cemetery in Little Rock, AR. Online condolences may be shared by clicking here.
James was born on October 31, 1935, in Effingham, IL, the son of James M. and Agatha (Siemer) Poynter. Jim grew up in Effingham, attending Sacred Heart School and Effingham High School. He was also an EIU graduate. Jim spent most of his life living in Arkansas working as a traveling salesman. He was smart with a desire to learn. Later on, he taught Industrial Arts. Jim was funny, witty, and had a dry sense of humor. He was also an avid collector and found value in most everything.
James is survived by his brother, Gary Poynter (Barb Ealy); nephew, Mike (Sharon) Poynter; nieces, Mindy (Mike) Nosbisch, and Jenny (Scott) Moore; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha.
The family of Jim would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Willowbrook House 2. They were simply wonderful caring for Jim.
