Heaven received a new angel when Mary Jo McCollum, age 96, of Louisville passed away at 5:20 am Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the Axiom Gardens of Flora.
She was born on October 14, 1928, in Flora, Illinois the daughter of Arlington and Carrie (Hargraves) Johnson. Mary Jo married Robert W. McCollum on April 8, 1949, in Louisville, Illinois and they shared 53 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on October 9, 2002. Mary Jo enjoyed being involved in the community. She was a member of the Louisville Methodist Church and was a member of many organizations over the years including the Louisville Woman’s Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Sewing Club, and the Clay County Hospital Auxiliary. She also worked for many years at The Gift Box at the Clay County Hospital. Mary Jo also enjoyed doing new things such as oil painting, ceramics, wreathing, and traveling. She really enjoyed watching the hummingbirds at her home always having several feeders out for them.
Mary Jo is survived by her two daughters: Christine of Decatur, Illinois, and Merrill (Jim) Hill of Fults, Illinois; a son: Clayton of Louisville; one grandson: Matthew Hill of St. Louis, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister: Betty Lou Harris; a brother: Ted Johnson.
It was Mary Jo’s wishes for cremation and a private family graveside will be held at a later date at the Orchard Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mary Jo’s memory to the Clay County Animal Rescue in Louisville. The McGriff Funeral Home in Louisville is honored to be entrusted with the families care and arrangements.
