ST. ELMO — Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and St. Elmo/Brownstown captured a victory each at the 64th Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening.
The Hatchets opened the night with a 47-38 win over Mulberry Grove.
The Hatchets’ Jackson Gurgel connected on three baskets for six points and Brody Bible hit two baskets in the opening quarter 13-7 run.
Windsor/Stew-Stras then had a 10-7 second period to lead 23-14 at halftime. Rylan Rincker put in a basket and was four of four at the line for six points while Gurgel added four more points.
Kendal Morris went to work in the third period with a regular basket and a three-pointer and the lead stood at 37-23 going into the final quarter.
Gurgel continued his hot shooting from the free throw line with four of four and finished with six of six. He hit six baskets and ended with 18 points to lead the Hatchets.
Mulberry Grove was led by Landon Sugg with 16 on eight field goals and a free throw.
St. Elmo/Brownstown finished with a 58-50 win over Patoka-Odin in the second contest.
Patoka-Odin swept out to a 13-3 opening quarter lead. But St. Elmo/Brownstown didn’t mess around, coming back with a 25-9 second quarter run to lead 28-22 at halftime.
Graiden Wilhour connected on two regular baskets and two three-pointers for 10 points, Gavin Sanders two three-pointers for six and Benji Lowe with five points.
Patoka-Odin came back with a 12-10 third period to pull within 38-34 but the Eagles put in 10 of 13 from the free throw line to finish strong.
Lowell Wilhour hit two regular baskets and was six of six at the line for 10 while G. Wilhour added on to his point total with two baskets and three free throws for seven points.
G. Wilhour finished with eight field goals, three from beyond the arc, and was three of five at the line for 22 points while L.Wilhour tallied 15 on three field goals and nine of 10 at the line.
Patoka-Odin was led by Roberts with 17 points and Robb with 11.
The tournament continues tonight as Ramsey and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City meet at 6:15 followed by Hillsboro against Cumberland at 7:45.
In Friday’s action, Mulberry Grove and Patoka/Odin meet at 6:15 followed by Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg against St. Elmo/Brownstown at 7:45.
The tournament comes to a close with finals scheduled for Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.

At Wayne City
Three games were contested as the 70th Conrad Allen Holiday Tournament continued Wednesday evening.
Thompsonville downed Sandoval 51-36 in the opener.
Edwards County (Albion) then edged Webber Township (Bluford), 50-48.
In the third contest, Wayne City was a 62-60 winner over Grayville.
The tournament continues tonight as Crab Orchard faces Edwards County at 5:30, Grayville meets Sandoval at 7 and North Clay and Thompsonville square off at 8:30.
Pool play comes to a close Friday evening with three games and will finish out with the finals Saturday.
Pool A standings are North Clay 2-0, Wayne City 2-1, Sandoval 1-2, Thompsonville 1-2, Grayville 1-3.
Pool B standings are Edwards County 3-0, Webber Township 2-1, Crab Orchard 1-1, Cisne 1-2 and Lovejoy 0-3. Lovejoy has forfeited all games at the tournament.
