CHARLESTON -- Effingham tallied an Apollo Conference volleyball victory over Charleston Thursday.

The Hearts won 25-15, 25-7 and improved to 8-4 overall.

Bella Austin led the Hearts in kills with nine and digs with eight while Alyssa Martin had four aces. Hanna Thompson led the team in assists with seven. Austin and Mckenzie Love had two blocks each.

In the junior varsity match, the Hearts won 25-13, 25-18 and improved to 9-1 on the season. In freshman/sophomore play, Charleston won 17-21, 21-9, 15-4.

At Marshall

Effingham St. Anthony fell to Marshall in Thursday evening action.

Marshall won the opener 25-17 but the Bulldogs came back with a 25-23 victory. Marshall then went 27-25 to win the match.

Addi Nuxoll led the Bulldogs in kills with 11 and digs with 11. Nancy Ruholl had 15 assists. Audrey LaSarge led in aces with five.

The Bulldogs are now 6-5 on the season.

St. Anthony claimed the junior varsity match, 25-22, 25-13.

At Marshall

At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) claimed a varsity win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Thursday.

North Clay won the varsity contest. CHBC won the opening set 25-18 but the Cardinals came back with 25-16, 25-20 scores for the match. CHBC dropped to 0-4 in the National Trail Conference, 4-5 overall.

CHBC was led by Kyleigh Wallace with eight kills, two aces and two blocks. Haley Doty had seven assists. Ellie Miller and Birgen Schlanser led in digs with 11 each.

In the junior vasrity match, CHBC was a 25-20, 25-18 winner. North Clay claimed the freshman/sophomore contest, 27-25, 25-22.

At Louisvile

At St. Elmo

Windsor/Stewardosn-Strasburg handed St. Elmo/Brownstown a 25-15, 25-17 loss in National Trail Conference volleyball play Thursday.

The Hatchets were led by Kinley Quast with three aces and nine digs, Ellie Wittenberg with nine kills, Brinlie Durbin with 25 assists and Mya Friese with nine digs.

"We had a pretty detailed practice last night of things to work on for the Champaign Central Tourney next weekend," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "It makes me pretty proud when I can say we were able to mark the majority of those boxes off tonight. We will keep working hard for consistency."

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Addie Sasse and Maya Barker with six points each. Peyton Barker had eight kills. Sasse led in assists with eight. M. Barker had seven digs.

In junior varsity play, St. Elmo/Brownstown was the winner, 25-19, 25-20. Windsor/Stew-Stras dropped to 3-4. SEB also claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 25-15, 25-12.

Teutopolis won both the junior varsity and varsity matches over Neoga Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes claimed the varsity contest, 25-21, 25-23. Claresa Ruholl led in digs with 19. Kaylie Jordan had seven assists, Elise Pals led in blocks with two. Gabby Tegler had five kills. Sara Zumbahlen led in points with seven and two aces.

The Shoes are now 9-5 on the season and back in action Saturday at the Charleston Tournament.

In the junior varsity match, Teutopolis was a winner 25-19, 25-9.

Altamont lost the opening set to Cisne by a 25-23 count. But the Indians came back strong with 25-10, 25-21 scores for the match win Thursday.

Makaylee Splecter led in aces for the Indians with three and assists with 26. Riley Rippetoe had eight kills and one block. Laila Hankins also had one block. Hope Roedl led in digs with 20.

At Altamont

Newton handed Casey-Westfield losses in both junior varsity and varsity play Thursday.

The Eagles won the varsity contest 25-16, 25-21 to improve to 12-4 on the season. Bierman, Martin, Mahaffey, Schafer and Frichtl had one ace each. Hermann led in kills with seven and digs with nine. Mahaffey had 15 assists. Bierman led in blocks with two.

In the junior vasrity contest, Newton was a winner, 25-14, 24-26, 15-6.

Newton is back in action at the St. Anthony Tournament Saturday facing Tolono Unity at 8 a.m., Triad at 10 a.m .and Uvniersity Lab at noon.

Cumberland picked up a victory over Blue Ridge in Thursday action.

The Pirates won 25-19, 25-8. Suzy Fritts had 10 assists and three aces for the Pirates. Maddy McElravy led in kills with 10. Mia Holsapple had two blocked shots. Leah Gray led in digs with 16 while MacKenzie Claybaugh had 11.
