St. Anthony, S. Central, WSS, Neoga Pick Up Volleyball Wins

Effingham St. Anthony fought off Robinson and pulled out a high school volleyball victory Thursday.

The Bulldogs claimed the opener by a 25-21 count but Robinson came back to take the next set, 29-27. St. Anthony then got tough and claimed the match, 25-21.

Abbi Hatton had 10 kills while Andrea Rudolphi had nine and also led in digs with 35. Anna Faber, Addie Wernsing and Rudolphi had one ace each. Anna Niemeyer led the Bulldogs in blocks with four. Wernsing had 19 assists.

St. Anthony also claimed the junior varsity contest, 16-25, 25-10, 25-20 and won the freshman/sophomore match, 25-17, 25-13.

At Altamont

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg came calling and handed Altamont a National Trail Conference loss in two sets, 25-17, 25-19.

Ella Kinkelaar, Kinley Quast and Ainslie Eident had two aces each for the winners. Halle Moomaw led in kills with eight and had two solo blocks. Kinkelaar had 12 assists. Gabby Vonderheide and Quast had 10 digs each.

"We struggled a bit tonight but hopefuly can use it as a teaching moment before going into the Crossroads Classic," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte.

Altamont was led by Grace Lemke with four kills, Peyton Osteen with 14 assists and one ace, Brianna Hassebrock with three blocks and Maddie Splechter with six digs.

Windsor/Stew-Strs also captured the junior varsity match, 25-12, 25-23 to improve to 4-0.

The two teams split in freshman/sophomore play. Altamont won 21-13 while WSS claimed a 21-16 victory. WSS is now 4-2-2.

South Central was a winner over Clay City in action Thursday evening.

The Cougars won 25-15, 25-22 to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Brooklyn Garrett led the winners in kills with seven and digs with eight. Sierra Arnold also had eight digs. Brooke Cowger led in aces with three and had two blocks. Olivia Brauer also had two blocks.

Clay City was led in kills by Taylor PIttman with three and blocks with five. Chelsea Beck had three aces. Keidra Kuenstler led in digs with 22.

Neoga handed Martinsville a loss in a non-conference matchup Thursday.

The Indians won 25-16, 25-10. Sydney Hakman led the Indians in digs with four and aces with three. Andrea Burcham also had three aces. Haylee Campbell led in kills with four. Burcham and Campbell had two blocks each. Burcham led in assists with seven.

Edwards County (Albion) claimed a victory over Newton Thursday evening.

Edwards County took the opener 25-11 but  Newton fought back with a 25-12 count. The Lions then won the match, 25-19.

Leading Newton were Rauch with eight kills, Schafer with 19 assists and 10 digs and Shull with two blocks. The Eagles drop to 9-5 on the season.

The Eagles claimed the junior varsity match, 25-20, 22-25, 17-15 but fell in freshman play, 21-25, 25-22, 15-2.
