EHS, St. A, CHBC, WSS, SEB, T-town Nab Volleyball Wins

Effingham High School opened the volleyball season with a victory over Newton Thursday. The Hearts won the opener 25-18 before Newton took the second game 25-23. The final contest went to EHS 27-25 for the match.

Natgalie Carie led the Hearts in kills with nine. Carsyn Fearday had 20 assists. Kiyah Kuhlman led in blocks with four. Miranda Fox had 25 digs.

Newton was led by Probst with seven kills and three aces while Geltz had 19 digs, Kuhl five blocks and Hemrich 15 assists.

In the junior varsity match, EHS claimed a 25-21, 25-17 victory. The Hearts also won the freshman match 25-19, 25-15.

At Farina

Effingham St. Anthony hit the road to South Central for its season opening match and won in two games, 25-22, 25-16.

The Bulldogs were led by Meg Richards with 13 kills, Anna Jones and Katie Kabbes with one ace each, Abby Stock with 22 assists and Kabbes with eight points.

South Central was led by Madyson Magnus with eight points, Lauren Lutz with three assists, Mady Kollman with three digs and Kasey Landreth with three kills.

The Bulldogs also claimed the junior varsity match losing the opener 25-22 but coming back with 25-18, 25-16 counts. The freshman contest also went to St. Anthony, 12-25, 25-21, 15-9.

At Dieterich

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City moved its early record to 2-0 with a win over Dieterich Thursday.

The Bobcats claimed the match in two games, 25-19, 25-21. Allie Stell had three kills while Hailey Persinger had three aces. Paeton Underwood and Katlyn Johnson had three assists each. Lauren Wojcik and Rylee Black had a block each.

Dieterich was led by Emily Bloemer with three kills and three aces, Jenny Robards with four assists and Allie Poe with five digs.

CHBC also nabbed the junior varsity win, 21-25, 25-15, 25-17.

At Moweaqua

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg opened its season with a match victory over Moweaqua Central A&M Thursday.

The Hatchets tallied 25-19, 25-18 scores for the varsity win.

Anna Schlechte led in aces with three. Megan Schlechte had 10 kills. Mackenzi Tabbert led in assists with 22.

"The girls were very anxious to play tonight," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We lost focus at times but hopefully will irmprove. I thought everyone pulled their weight tonight and contributed to the win."

The Hatchets also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19.

At Moweaqua

Vandalia came calling and downed St. Elmo/Brownstown in action Thursday.

SEB won the opener 25-14 but Vandalia came back with 25-21, 25-13 wins for the match.

Macy Cripe and Natalie Oberlink had seven kills each for SEB. Cripe and Katelyn Maxey had two aces each. Marlee Nolen had 24 assists. Vayda Smith and Kalea Yagow had six digs each.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown -- Cripe, 7 kills, 2 aces; Oberlink, 7 kills, 1 block; Smith, 5 kills, 6 digs; Maxey, 2 aces, 5 digs; Nolen, 24 digs; Yagow, 6 digs

 

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis handed Salem a loss in two games Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes won 25-17, 25-8. Emma Deters had four blocks for the Shoes and five kills. Erica Michels had two digs and five kills and Kate Volk had 10 assists.

In the junior varsity match, T-town was a winner, 23-25, 25-16, 17-15.
