EHS Beats Charleston, Area Volleyball Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Charleston in Apollo Conference volleyball action and captured a win Tuesday evening.

The Hearts won 25-18, 25-13 to improve to 10-18 on the season. Chloe Martin led in kills with six, aces with five and blocks with three. Miranda Fox had 12 digs. Carsyn Fearday led in assists with eight.

Effingham also nabbed the junior varsity match 25-14, 25-23 to improve to 9-6. Charleston claimed the freshman/sophomore match 25-23, 25-16. EHS drops to 8-9-1.

At St. Anthony

Vandalia came calling and picked up a three-set victory over Effingham St. Anthony Tuesday.

The Bulldogs won the opener 25-19 but Vandalia came back with 26-24 and 25-17 sets for the match.

St. Anthony was led by Sydney Gibson with 11 kills, Meg Richards with four aces and Marci Mills and Shea Kinkelaar with four blocks each.

Vandalia also nabbed the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-14.

At Sullivan

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg took a non-conference victory over Sullivan in action Tuesday.

The Hatchets won 25-10, 25-10 to improve to 19-4 on the season. Taylor Rentfro led in aces with five and digs with six. Mackenzi Tabbert led in assists with 17.  Megan Schlechte had nine kills.

Windsor/Stew-Stras tallied a victory in junior varsity action, 25-10, 25-13 to improve to 14-3.

Neoga picked up a National Trail Conference win over Dieterich. The Indians won 25-20, 25-15.

Neoga was led by Mary Hill with 11 kills, Blair Banning and Aly  Easton with six assists each, Andrea Estay and Zoe Meadows with five digs each. Easton had three aces.

 Dieterich was led by Lauren Garbe with five kills and two blocks, Hannah Hunzinger with six assists and six digs, Nicole Flood with two aces and Jenny Robards with two blocks.

In junior varsity action, Neoga was a winner 21-25, 25-18, 25-13.

Shelbyville claimed a non-conference victory over St. Elmo/Brownstown in play Tuesday.

The Rams won 25-17, 25-16.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Marlee Nolen with three kills, three aces and six points while Madison Carson had four assists and Dana Shelton nine digs.

At Beecher City

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City picked up a win over Patoka in action Tuesday.

The Bobcats fell to Patoka in three sets. Patoka won the opener 25-15 but CHBC came back with a 25-23 count. Patoka then won 25-22. CHBC drops to 5-15 overall.

Lauren Wojcik and Haley Atchley led CHBC with four kills each. Wojcik had three aces and a block. Taylor Oldham and Kylee Bertin had six assists each. Olivia Witteborg led in digs with 18.

CHBC won the junior varsity match 25-18 and came back to take the match 25-19.

At Beecher City

At Teutopolis

Altamont claimed the opening set over Teutopolis 25-18 but the Wooden Shoes rallied for 30-25, 25-22 counts for the match.

Julia Frye led the Shoes in blocks with nine, Jolene Bueker with 11 digs and 13 kills, Savannah Grimes with 11 digs and 18 assists and Macy Michels with 13 points.

"Playing from behind has become the norm for this group," said T-town Coach Tim Mills. "We won our 18th match. In six of those 18 wins, we have lost the first set. We came out blazing in set two and built a 10 point lead. Altamont made a run and took the lead at 25-24. Altamont was at match point three times and each time the girls rallied to take the ball back. We evenully won set two by a score of 30-28.

"We spotted them six points in set three and then fought all the way back and tied the score at 19-19. After a sideout gave us the ball and the lead at 21-19, Kate Volk came in to serve and dropped in a couple big aces. Her third serve netted a freeball and Jolene smoked her 13th kill of the match to put us up 23-19. A block pushed us to 25 points and the match."

Altamont claimed the junior varsity match 25-20, 25-20 and the freshman contest 25-22, 25-17.
