EHS wins, St. A Loses; Area Roundup

Effingham High School swept Newton in volleyball action Thursday evening. The Hearts picked up the varsity win 26-24, 25-21 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Deedra Myers and Kelli Utz led the Hearts in kills with four each. Felicia Totten had nine assists while Utz contributed 14 digs. Stephanie Robb led in blocks with four.
In junior varsity action, Effingham won 25-21, 25-17 to improve to 2-0. The freshman Hearts also won 25-14, 25-21 and are 2-0.

Edwards County (Albion) came calling and picked up a close match victory over Effingham St. Anthony, 25-23, 25-21. The Bulldogs fall to 0-2 on the young season.
Haley Mathis led the Bulldogs with six kills, two blocks and 12 assists; Kassy Dammerman had eight digs. Megan Nuxoll chipped in with six kills. Lauren Wendt and Maggie Mumm had two blocks each.
St. Anthony won the junior varsity match 25-21, 10-25, 25-20 and is now 1-1.

At Strasburg
Stewardson-Strasburg pulled out a close win over Cumberland to remain unbeaten at 2-0.
The Comets lost the opener 25-22 but came back with 25-23 and 25-23 victories.
"The girls were very focused tonight and played to win," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "They battled in game one but Cumberland's defense hurt us. Teamwork was key. They communicated well and worked together. This was a big win for us."
Kelsie Walden led in assists with 24 for the Comets. Kendall Knop had 11 digs and three aces while Brittani Tabbert led in kills with 11.
In junior varsity play, Cumberland was a winner 25-18, 22-25. Stew-Stras drops to 0-2.

Marshall came calling and picked up two wins over host Dieterich.
In the varsity match, Marshall won 25-15, 25-15. Dieterich drops to 1-3 on the season. The Maroons were led in assists by Shelby Wendling with seven and points with four. She also had an ace. Candace Niemerg had an ace and led in digs with five and kills with eight.
Marshall won the junior varsity contest, 14-25, 25-16, 25-21. Dieterich drops to 1-3.

Windsor handed visiting Teutopolis a varsity loss 25-12, 25-19.
Leading the Wooden Shoes were Lucy Niemerg in kills with three and digs with five. Katelyn Ruholl had four assists and Michelle Schmidt had three blocks.
Windsor defeated T-town in the junior varsity match 26-24, 25-19. The two squads split freshman/sophomore matches with T-town winning the opener 25-19 and Windsor coming back to win the second game 25-13.
