Newton Captures Cumberland Boys Track Invitational Title

TOLEDO -- Newton High School captured the championship of the Cumberland Pirate Boys Track Invitational Tuesday.

The Eagles tallied 148 points followed by Catlin Salt Fork 113, Efifngham St. Anthony 78, Altamont 66, Casey-Westfield 39, Cumberland 33, Broadlands Heritage 26, Vandalia 15, Palestine 10, Brownstown/St. Elmo 10, Teutopolis 8 and Hume Shiloh 8.

Parker Wolf and Evan Schafer contributed a lot of points to the Eagles cause. Wolf claimed first place in the 100 with a time of 11.81 seconds while Schafer was second in 11.78. Schafer took first in the 400 in 51.65 seconds while Wolf was second in 52.35.

Both were members of the 1600 relay team along with Owen Mahaffey and Luis Zavala that took first in 3:36.28 minutes. They also were on the 400 relay team that finished second.

The Eagles were 1-2 in the 800 as Mahaffey won in 2:04.87 minutes and Luke Weber took second in 2:06.77.

Nweton claimed the 3200 relay in 8:48.79 mintues. Zavala, Nick Zwililng, Nicholas Shamhart and Weber were team members.

Effingham St. Anthony's Griffen Elder was a winner in two events. Elder claimed the 1600 in 4:42.44 minutes and the 3200 in 10:20.21. Also taking a first for the Bulldogs was Max Sager in the pole vault at 10 feet.

Altamont had two first place finishers. Logan Duncan won the 200 in 24.43 seconds. Ben Roedl was a winner in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet.
