Newton Captures Own Girls Track Open

NEWTON -- Newton High School played host to five girls track teams and captured the meet Monday.

The Eagles tallied 177 points followed by Effingham St. Anthony 108, Mattoon 86, Olney 70, Altamont 64 and Paris 24.

Newton's Laney Hemrich was a winner in the 100 with a time of 13.1 seconds. Rylea Borgic won the 1600 in 6:05.9 minutes. Grace Smithenry captured the high jump at 1.55 meters. The triple jump went to Alexis Hetzer with a jump of 9.87 meters.

The Eagles 800 relay team of Alaina Kuhl, Sydney Kinder, Brooke A. Schafer and Borgic won in 1:56.7 minutes.

Newton finished with 11 seconds, three thirds, six fourths, two fifth and two sixths.

Altamont's Grace Nelson was a four-event winner. Nelson crossed the finish line in 26.3 seconds to capture the 200, won the 100 hurdles in 14.7 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 46.7 and  claimed the long jump at 5.02 meters. Peyton Osteen nabbed the discus with a throw of 24.99 meters.

St. Anthony was a winner in the 400 relay. The team of Maggie Moeller, Grace Niebrugge, Erin Stewart and Anna Greene won in 54.0 seconds.

The Bulldogs' Allison Geen won the pole vault at 3.05 meters.
