(New York, NY) -- The USTA is announcing plans for a redesign of the United States Tennis Center, which includes adding a retractable roof to Arthur Ashe Stadium. In addition, the redesign calls for two new stadiums as well as a complete redesign of the grounds. The price tag for the project is about 550-million-dollars, which USTA officials say will not be passed on to spectators. Gordon Smith is Executive Director of the USTA.
Other changes include moving the Grandstand to a new location on the grounds, better access to side courts, and the ability to watch the practice courts. Work could begin as early as this fall, with the entire project complete by the 2018 U.S.Open. When completed, about ten-thousand more people per day will be able to attend the open.
