Several Area Players in Second Day Action at State Tennis Tourney

BUFFALO GROVE -- Effingham St. Anthony, Teutopolis and Newton tennis players were still alive in the Class A State Tennis Tournament after competition Thursday. To exit the state tournament, a player must suffer two losses.
St. Anthony's Emilee Mossman, competing in singles action, defeated Lulu Nicks, Woodstock North, 6-4, 6-2 before dropping a second round match 6-0, 6-1 to Mia Bertino of Joliet Catholic Academy. Mossman then won over Sophie DiBiase of Carbondale, 6-1, 6-0. She will play in the third round of consolation today against Claire Nachtwey of Springfield lSacred Heart-Griffin.
In doubles play, St. Anthony's Kelly Rentfrow and Claire Wortman won two straight, downing Kalisa Goertz and Mera Gietl of Rochester 6-2, 6-2 and Danielle Beard and Maddie Monat of Elmhurst Timothy Christian, 6-0, 6-3. The pair will face Maddie Bauer and McCoy Hutchison of Joliet Catholic Academy today.
Teutopolis doubles players Sidney Brumleve and Lauren Hemmen defeated Kirsten Birk and Danielle Murawski, Oak Forest, 6-4, 6-4 and Mary Nester and Olivia Melichar of Belleville Althoff Catholic 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. They will take on Delnaz Patel and Florence Almeda of Chicago University today in the third round.
Christa Schwinke and Audra Breer, Teutopolis, defeated Elizabeth Eckerty and Ellie Tutewiler, Casey-Westfield, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The pair then fell to Emma Melichar and Madelyn Skinner of Belleville Althoff Catholic 6-4, 6-4 then dropped from further tournament play with a loss to Grace Mathesis and anna Huber of Normal University, 6-3, 6-2.
Teutopolis singles player Alli Brumleve lost in opening round play to Flora's Kelsey Krutsinger 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 then won over Elizabeth Towell of Maple Park Kaneland, 6-1, 6-4 before dropping a final match to Gina Vale of Wheaton St.Francis, 6-2, 6-2 to exit the tournament.
Newton has one singles player competing. Jacelyn Street defeated Sally Litfin, West Chicago Wheaton Academy, 6-2, 6-3 then fell to Natalie Muldowney, Rockford Boylan Catholic, Newton, 6-1, 6-1. She came back with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Gwen Milas of New Lenox Providence Catholic. Street will now face Grace Chang of Chicago F.W. Parker today.
