Hearts Blank Salem, Shoes Beat Mattoon in Tennis

SALEM -- Effingham tallied a 9-0 victory over Salem in high school tennis competition Monday.

The Hearts' Skyler Schafer and Shania Cornell blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0 while Chloe Funneman won 6-1, 6-0. Lauryn Douthit went 6-1, 6-1, Kyra Bannister 6-2, 6-1 and Taylor Boyle 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles play, Funneman and Douthit won 8-1 at No. 1, Bannister and Schafer claimed an 8-3 win while Cornell and Boyle won 8-1.

At Salem

Singles

No. 1 -- Chloe Funneman (E) defeated Lexi Self (S), 6-1, 6-0

No. 2 -- Lauryn Douthit (E) defeated Savannah Harrell (S), 6-1, 6-1

No. 3 -- Kyra Bannister (E) defeated Kaitlin Nix (S), 6-2, 6-1

No. 4 -- Skyler Schafer (E) defeated Katie McCormick (S), 6-0, 6-0

No. 5 -- Shania Cornell (E) defeated Sonya Jha (S), 6-0, 6-0

No. 6 -- Taylor Boyle (E) defeated Caitlyn Henson (S), 6-4, 6-0

Doubles

No. 1 -- Funneman-Douthit (E) defeated Self-Harrell (S), 8-1

No. 2 -- Bannister-Schafer (E) defeated Nix-Katelyn Wilson (S), 8-3

No. 3 -- Cornell-Boyle (E) defeated Hailee Wooters-Claudia Woods (S), 8-1

 

At Mattoon

Teutopolis pushed its record to 7-1 on the season with a 6-3 win over Mattoon.

The Green Wave won the opening singles match in a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 victory but the Shoes came back with two straight as Lauren Hemmen won 4-6, 7-5, 10-3 and Audra Breer claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Mattoon won at No. 4 and this one also went the distance as Sidney Brumleve won the opener 7-6(2) before Mattoon's Jackie Boyd won 6-3, 10-6. The Shoes claimed the next two matches. Julia Hardiek won 6-1, 6-2 and Alli Brumleve took a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

In doubles play, the Green Wave claimed the top spot but it was a fight as Hemmen and Brumleve battled only to fall 6-4, 3-6, 10-4. T-town's Christa Schwinke and Breer won at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2 and Hardiek and Nicole Deters took the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.
