NEWTON -- Newton High School claimed a rare victory over Effingham in tennis competition Monday, 8-1.

The Eagles' Jocelyn Street, Cynthia Griffith, Sydney Zumbahlen, Lesley Woods, Chelsea Black and Claire Griffith nabbed singles wins.

In doubles play, Effingham's lone point came from the No. 1 doubles team of Chloe Funneman and Lauryn Douthit. Newton's Zumbahlen and Woods won at No. 2 and Black and Griffith combined at No. 3.

"We had some tough matches tonight," said EHS Coach Erik Williamson. "Several girls played well and had close sets, even some tiebreakers, but Newton came out on top. Our one win was a good comeback win at the No. 1 doubles with Funneman and Douthit. Great tennis was played by both teams."
