Serena Williams had a record-setting win on route to the US Open quarterfinals, but sister Venus Williams fell to Karolina Pliskova in a third-set tiebreak.
Top-seeded Serena took out Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and eight minutes. She will now face 2014 French Open runner-up Simona Halep, who eliminated No. 11 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 7-5.
Serena's victory gives her 308 match wins in Grand Slam match victories in tennis' Open era, one more than Roger Federer for the all-time lead.
Federer can't increase his total until next season, because he is sitting out the US Open and the rest of 2016 due to problems with his surgically repaired left knee.
"It's a huge number. I think it's very significant actually. I think it's something that, you know, just really talks about the length of my career, in particular," Williams said. "I've been playing for a really long time, but also, you know, given that consistency up there. That's something that I'm really proud of."
Williams is 308-42 at major tournaments, an .880 winning percentage, and is now three more wins from her 23rd Grand Slam singles title, which would break a tie with Steffi Graf for the most in the Open era, which started in 1968.
