Bulldogs Blank Shelbyville in Tennis

Effingham St. Anthony High School blanked Shelbyville 9-0 in tennis competition Monday.

Winning in singles play were Jay Niebrugge, Chris Jones, Ian Harris, Liam Hammer, Chandler Martelli and Nick Grunloh.

Doubles play went to Niebrugge and Jones at No. 1 while Harris and Hammer claimed the No. 2 spot and Nick Grunloh and Brian Ritz claimed the No. 3 position.

The Bulldogs tied with Alton Marquette Saturday for first place in the St. Anthony Catholic Schools Tournament.

The two squads had 10 points each while Champaign St. Thomas More had nine and Quincy Notre Dame six.

Nick Grunloh took first place in the No. 2 singles while Jay Niebrugge and Chris Jones won the No. 1 doubles title.

"Outstanding players for St. Anthony today were No. 2 singles player Nick Grunloh, winning in straight sets in both of his matches," said Coach Joe Reynolds. "Nick has made tremendous improvement in the last month. Jay and Chris won both of their matches against quality opponeint s at the No. 1 doubles. Chris and Jay also won the St. Anthony Doubles Invite last month."
