Local Players Eliminated at State Girls Tennis Tournament

All of the local players competing at the State Girls Tennis Tournament were eliminated on the first day of competition.

Lauren Hemmen and Molly Smith opened first round play with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Maggie Hines and Caroline Witkowski of Wilmette Loyola Academy, but the duo came back to beat Elana Ferris and Alison Benoit of Bradley-Bourbonnais 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of consolation.

The pair then claimed a win over Molly Gillis and Jill Johnson of Washington 6-2, 6-2. The pair advanced to the third round of consolation at Buffalo Grove where they lost to Maria Mezo and Mackenzie Cadagin of Edwardsville, 5-7, 1-6 and were eliminated from further tournament play.

The other doubles team of Audra Breer and Sidney Brumleve did not fare as well. The pair fell to Paige Ackerman and Emily Sullivan of St. Charles East 6-3, 6-2 in opening round play. Then fought hard in the first round of consolation only to fall to Danielle Beard and Maddie Monat Elmhurst Timothy Christian 6-3, 3-6 (10-5) to fall from further tournament action.

The Wooden Shoes also had a lone singles player competing. Kaitlin Deters dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Sophia Osabuohien of Homewood-Flossmoor. She then exited the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Christina Su of Normal University.
