T-town Wins Mattoon Tennis Invite, EHS Sixth; St. A Competes at Bloomington

Teutopolis High School claimed the championship of the Mattoon Tennis Invitational Saturday.

MATTOON -- Teutopolis High School claimed the championship of the Mattoon Tennis Invitational Saturday. Coach Kaye Kimpling's outfit won with 38 1/2 points followed by Charleston 28 1/2, Casey-Westfield 27, Mattoon 26, Mount Zion 25, Champaign St. Thomas More 21 1/2, Effingham 21, Olney 21, Mattoon JV 11, Salem 6 1/2, Shelbyville 6, Mount Zion JV 3 and Rantoul 0.

Christa Schwinke captured first place in the No. 2 singles. Schwinke defeated Ariel Miller of Charleston 6-1, 6-1, Paige  Willard of Mount Zion 6-2, 6-1 and Caroline Waddell of St. Thomas More, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Kaitlin Deters and Julia Hardiek finished in third place in the No. 1 and No. 3 singles respectively.

In doubles play, Molly Smith and Lauren Hemmen were champions at the No. 2 position. The pair defeated Chloe Anderson and Jaida Brockman of Mattoon, 6-1, 6-1; Ashley Sherwood and Lexi Black of Casey-Westfield, 6-1, 6-1 and Kaelyn Bailey and Rachel Woods of Olney, 6-3, 6-2.

Audra Breer and Sidney Brumleve finished fifth at the No. 1 doubles.

Efifngham's Emma Kull and Megan Allen captured third place at the No. 1 doubles spot. Chloe Funneman and Lauryn Douthit finished with a share of fifth place at the No. 2 doubles.

Skyler Schafer finished with a share of fifth place at the No. 3 singles.
