Effingham High School picked up its first team sweep of the season by downing Newton 9-0 in girls tennis action Monday.
Lauren Hoekstra had a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 while Madisson Haake tacked on a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2. Claudia Vinuelea-Ayllon and Kaitlyn Gurley were 6-0, 6-0 winners. Shelby Funneman won 6-3, 6-2 and Emma Kull captured a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
In doubles play, Haake and Gurley won at No. 1, 6-0, 6-4. Vinuelea and Funneman won 6-0, 6-1. Gabby Klein and Bethany Vail took the No. 3 spot, 6-1, 6-2.
The Hearts travel to Vandalia today for a 4:15 p.m. contest.

Teutopolis bounced Casey-Westfield to the tune of 9-0 in play Tuesday.
Singles play was easy for the Wooden Shoes as Elena Breer and Allison Vogt won 6-1, 6-0, Holley Wright claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win, Megan Miller won 6-2, 6-1, Kaitelin Deters 6-1, 6-1 and Ashley Hemmen 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles play, Cheyenne Lueken combined with Vogt to win 6-0, 6-2. Deters and Hemmen went 6-1, 6-1. The closest contest of the match came at the No. 2 doubles when Miller and Morgan Drees lost the opener 4-6 but came back with 6-1, 7-5 scores to pull out the win.

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes junior varsity squad traveled to Robinson and went 11-0 for the win.
"It was a great night for playing tennis and we took advantage of the beautiful weather and played a lot of matches," said T-town Coach Debbie Stephens. "The girls all played well and their record improves to 6-0. We'll be back in action Thursday against Mount Zion."
