T-town Takes Second; Effingham Fifth At Mattoon Invitaitonal

MATTOON -- Teutopolis High School captured second place while Effingham finished fifth in the Mattoon Tennis Invitational Saturday.

Winning the event was Danville with 41.5 points followed by T-town 34, Mattoon 33, Morton 28, Effingham 27.5, Olney 20.5, Mount Zion 20, Charleston 19.5, Casey-Westfield 8.5, Salem 7.5, Shelbyville 3, Newton 2 and Paris 0.

Effingham's Lauren Hoekstra captured the championship in the No. 1 singles spot. Claudia  Vinuela-Ayllon was defeated in the first round but played out the back draw to tie for fifth place at No. 2 singles. At the No. 3 singles spot, Kaitlyn Gurley took third place.

Also participating in doubles were Madisson Haake and  Emma Kull playing at No. 1 and Gabby Klein and Shelby Funneman playing at No. 2.

"The weather was perfect and the girls played great," said EHS Coach Angela Woods.

T-town's Kaitlin Deters took the championship at the No. 3 singles spot. Deters won the opener 6-2, 6-1, then downed  Effingham's Gurley, 6-4, 6-3 and won the title with a victory, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Holly Wright finished second at the No. 2 singles spot. Elena Breer competed in the No. 1 spot.

Cheyenne Lueken and Allison Vogt finished third at the No. 1 doubles while Morgan Drees and Ashley Hemmen also took third, at the No. 2 doubles spot.

"This was a great outing for the girls," said T-town Coach Kaye Kimpling. "They played very aggressive tennis all day and defeated some pretty impressive opponents. When things got tough, they bore down and persevered. I am really impressed with the level of play that they all showed."
