St. Anthony, Teutopolis, Altamont in Sectional Championship Games

MOWEAQUA -- The St. Anthony Bulldogs advanced to the championship game of the Moweaqua 1A Sectional Wednesday with an 11-1 five-inning win over the Pawnee Indians.  The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.

The complexion of the game changed in one inning. 

The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the third when, with one out, Paige Koester singled.  Morgan Gardewine followed with a single and Makayla Walsh walked to load the bases.  Hunter Niebrugge reached on an error that allowed the first two runs of the game to score and then Kristin Schuette followed with a triple that drove home two more runs to make it 4-0.  Kate Richards then homered to drive in Schuette.  After a single by Meghan Woltman, D.J. Brummer homered over the centerfield fence to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.

The Bulldogs scored three more times in the fourth.  Morgan Gardewine singled and stole second and after one out Hunter Niebrugge singled Gardewine home to make it 9-0.  Kristin Schuette and then Kate Richards drove home a run with a groundball out to extend the lead to 10-0.  Schuette scored after an error was committed and that gave the Bulldogs an 11-0 lead.

Pawnee got a run in the top of the fifth but that ended their rally and St. Anthony had a 10-run rule victory.

For St. Anthony, Paige Koester singled, stole a base and scored; Morgan Gardewine singled twice, scored twice and stole a base; Makayla Walsh walked and scored; Hunter Niebrugge reached on an error and singled, stole two bases and scored twice; Kristin Schuette tripled and singled, stole a base, scored twice and drove in two runs; Kate Richards homered and drove in two runs; Meghan Woltman singled and walked and scored; and D.J. Brummer homered and drove in two runs.

Meghan Woltman allowed just five hits to Pawnee batters and only two extra-base hits.  She walked just one batter and fanned seven.

St. Anthony is 15-9 on the season and will take on Cumberland Saturday at 11am for the sectional championship.  Cumberland won over Ramsey 13-3 in six innings Tuesday.

Altamont moved into the championship game of the Odin 1A Sectional with a 16-9 win Wednesday over Albion (Edwards County).

The Indians definitely had their hitting shoes on, banging out 18 hits, including three inside-the-park home runs. Phillips had a home runa nd two  RBI while Ledbetetr had two singles, a home run and two  RBI and Alwardt had a home run and three RBI. Teasley chipped in with two singles.

Edwards County also had three home runs in the game by Sexton, James and Schmittler. Sexton finished with three RBI.

Ledbetter picked up the pitching win on a nine-hitter with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Altamont will play the winner of Thursday's Wayne City/Okawville game Saturday at 11 a.m.

Teutopolis moved into the championship of the Class 2A Teutopolis Sectional with a 6-1 victory over Fairfield.

The Wooden Shoes pounded out 13 hits in the contest and took a 3-0 first inning lead. The Shoes tacked on a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Fairfield scored its lone run in the top of the seventh.

Kadi Borries was the winning pitcher on a three-hitter with seven walks and 11 strikeouts.

Swingler had a single and double while Anni Borries had a single, double and two RBI. Apke added a single, double and an RBI, Stephens had a double and an RBI and K. Borries three singles.

The Shoes are now 19-5 on the season and return to action Saturday at 10 a.m. for the championship against either Shelbyville or Carlyle.
