The St. Anthony Bulldogs lost the opening game of their 2022 softball season to Tolono Unity 8-1 on March 14.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs saw their season end to that same Tolono Unity squad 3-2 in the championship game of the Maroa-Forsyth 2A Sectional. We had the game on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

The Bulldogs looked poised for good things Saturday as they scored in the first inning. Cameran Rios reached on an error to start the game. One out later, Haley Niebrugge singled. Rios was thrown out trying to advance to third, but Niebrugge hustled around to second base. Maddie Kibler then reached on an error and Niebrugge came around to score on the play.

The Bulldogs doubled their lead in the top of the second when Anna Faber homered over the left field fence to make it 2-0. That's when the St. Anthony offense ran out of gas, though.

Tolono Unity scored in the bottom of the second ater Grace Frye led off with a base hit, and the Rockets scored their other two runs in the third after Gracie Renfrow and Taylor Henry singled home Lindy Bates and Ruby Tarr.

Those five runs were the only five runs scored in the game.

Lucy Fearday took the loss for St. Anthony, allowing three runs, two earned, on nine hits against two strikeouts in her route-going performance.

Taylor Henry also went the distance for Tolono Unity, giving up two runs, three earned, on three hits while striking out four.

Neither pitcher walked a batter in the game.

Aside from Faber's homer, Adysen Rios had the other two hits for St. Anthony.

St. Anthony wraps up their first season in Class 2A with a 26-5 record and a spot in the sectionals. That follows a trip to the state championship game in Class 1A a year ago.

St. Anthony says goodbye to seniors Grace Karolewicz and Alexis Stephens.
