Newton's Softball Season Comes To End With Loss

GILLESPIE -- Newton High School saw its season come to a close in the Class 2A Gillespie Softball Sectional with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Freeburg Thursday.

Newton edged out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Freeburg tied in the fifth and went into the eighth before scoring to pull out the victory.

The Eagles had a tough time with Freeburg pitcher Lizzy Ludwig. Ludwig went the eight innings, allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out 13.

The lone two hits for Newton came off the bats of Addy O'Dell and Bailee Frichtl with a single each. O'Dell had the RBI.

Meanwhile Freeburg had eight hits led by Lindsey Muskopf with two doubles and an RBI, Samantha Roulanaitis with a single, triple and an RBI and Nicole Edmiaston, Bailey Stambaugh and Abby Benedick with a double each.

Freeburg advances to face Gillespie today at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting, for the sectional championship and the right to advance to the Johnston City Super-Sectional Monday.
