Bulldogs, Hatchets, Eagles Win Softball Regional Titles

St. Anthony won the St. Joseph-Ogden Regional championship.

ST. JOSEPH -- Effingham St. Anthony put together 10 hits while allowing Paris only three in winning the Class 2A St. Joseph-Ogden Softball Regional championship Monday.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 4-1 opening inning lead then had three-run innings in the fourth and fifth.

Lucy Fearday threw a three-hitter while walking only one and striking out nine.

Meanwhile the Bulldogs were on offensively. Addie Wernsing led the way with a single, home run and three RBI. Madeline Kibler hit a home run and finished with four RBI. Sydney Kibler added a single, double and an RBI and Haley Niebrugge a double and an RBI.

"It was very fun seeing these girls succeed," said Coach Makayla Taylor.

In a quick turn-around, St. Anthony advances to the Maroa-Forsyth Sectional today where the Bulldogs will meet Bloomington Central Catholic at 6:30 p.m. Listen to the game on 979 XFM. The game will be held at Forsyth Park.

The opening contest today features Maroa-Forsyth against Tolono Unity at 4:30 p.m. The winners advance to the sectional championship game Saturday at 11 a.m.

Class 1A Oblong Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg seized victory in the Class 1A Oblong Regional in dramatic walk-off fashion Monday.

The Hatchets topped Hutsonville/Palestine 3-2 when Ella Kinkelaar singled on a 1-0 count in the bottom of the 10th, scoring the winning run.

WSS took the lead with a run in the fourth. Hutsonville/Palestine tallied two in the top of the sixth and the Hachets tied it in the bottom of the frame when Karlie Bean tripled to score the tying run.

Pitching was tough on both mounds as Bean struck out 15 while Hutsonville/Palestine's Izzy Sheets sat down 18.

WSS finished with eight hits in the contest. Bean had a single, triple and an RBI while Kinkelaar had two singles and an RBI and Sam Hayes a single and double. Alaira Friese and Ellie Wittenberg delivered a single each.

Windsor/Stew-Stras advances to the Class 1A Casey-Westfield Sectional and will meet Edwards County (Albion) at 6:30 p.m. Listen to the game on KJ Country 102.3.

The opening contest features South Central against Casey-Westfield at 4:30.

The winners advance to the sectional championship Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Class 2A Vandalia Regional

Newton High School struck early and struck hard to finish with a 9-3 win over Staunton and claimed the Class 2A Vandalia Regional championship Monday.

Newton broke a 2-2 opening inning tie with a three-run second then added on a single run in the third and three in the fourth for the 9-2 lead. Staunton came back with one run in the seventh.

The Eagles banged out 11 hits in the contest led by Ava Kessler with a double, home run and two RBI, Lexie Grove with a single, double and an RBI, Allie Stanley with a doubleand an RBI and Avery Mulvey and Lilly Kessler with two singles each. Addy O'Dell tallied a single and drove in a run while Camryn Martin had an RBI.

Kayla Kocher went the distance on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits, one walk and striking out one.

Newton advances to the Gillespie Sectional Wednesday to face Freeburg at 4:30 p.m. The opening game of the sectional will be held today at 4:30 p.m. with Gillespie against Breese Mater Dei. The championship is scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m.
