Effingham Keeps Winning; Other Friday Softball Scores

The Effingham High School softball team has been on a roll of late, posting another win Friday, 6-3 at Flora.

The Hearts plated three runs in the first inning and added single runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings.  Flora countered with single runs in the first and second and added a score in the seventh.

Ciara Kronewitter went the distance for Effingham, allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings of work, walking three and striking out seven.  One thing worth noting is that the softball Hearts played an errorless game while racking up 14 hits.  Jennings took the loss for Flora.

At the plate for Effingham, Kelli Utz singled twice and doubled and drove in a run, Brandy Pontious singled, Kaylee Tonn singled and drove in a run, Deedra Myers singled twice, Brittany Beals singled, Shelby Nunamaker singled twice, Gloria Rivera singled, Kronewitter helped her own cause with a double and single and drove in a run, and Courtney White doubled.

Effingham improved to 11-9 on the spring and are back in action Tuesday, hosting Teutopolis.

Windsor defeated St. Anthony 11-5 Friday in National Trail Conference Tournament action.

Windsor led 6-0 before St. Anthony scored four times in the fourth to make it close, but Windsor responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away.  The Bulldogs scored a run in the seventh.

Lindsay Floyd went the distance to get the win for Windsor, allowing five runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out four. 

Meghan Woltman took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing six runs on eight hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 2-2/3 innings of work.  Makayla Walsh pitched the final 3-1/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks while fanning four.

At the plate for Windsor, Bell singled twice and doubled, scored three times and drove in a run, Floyd had three singles, scored twice and drove in three runs, Kuhl singled twice and drove in three runs, Reed singled and drove in a run, Bailey singled, Bridges singled and scored, and Tabor singled, scored twice and drove in two runs.

For St. Anthony, Paige Koester singled and scored, Morgan Gardewine singled and scored, Walsh singled, scored and drove in a run, Kate Richards doubled and scored and drove in a run, Meghan Woltman doubled and drove in a run, D.J. Brummer singled and scored, and Megan Nuxoll doubled and drove in a run.

St. Anthony is now 10-7 on the spring and will play the loser of Monday's Altamont/Stew-Stras game for third place in the tournament.  Altamont and Stew-Stras were rained out on Friday.

In a NTC Tourney consolation bracket game Friday, Dieterich edged Neoga 5-4. 

Neoga scored twice in the first but Dieterich plated a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1.  Dieterich scored three runs in the fifth to pull ahead 4-2.  Neoga tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh, but Dieterich scored in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.

Thoele got the win, Neece took the loss.

At the plate for Dieterich, Thoele singled and walked and scored twice, Vahling tripled and singled, scored twice and drove in a run, and Cox doubled and singled and drove in two runs.

For Neoga, Blazich singled and walked twice and scored two runs, and Albin singled twice and doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs.

With the win, Dieterich moves into the consolation championship game of the tournament, taking on the winner of the St. Elmo/Brownstown vs. South Central game that was rained out on Friday.
